It's April 1st when I post this, but rest assured - this is not a joke.

I have done something that I usually do not do. I have written a program that I have no use for myself. I did it mostly as a programming exercise. Still, I think some of you may find it instructive. What it does is to compare the names listed as Credited As in your collection, and checks if the same name appears in the regular name field in some other title. If that is the case, then you probably do not have proper name linking. So here is what it might look like when you open your exported XML file in NameCheck:

Double-click a line in the main window and a detail window will open up, looking something like this:

This helps you find the broken linkage. Now it's up to you to do the rest of the job, if you have a mind to.

Version 1.0.0 is found here.

No guarantee that it will find all broken linkage.

Thank you very much for this tool, that can help many users  . I think the linking problem is the most difficult to solve, so everything that can be done with tools is very useful.

There are two other important reasons of non-linking names :

- Asian names : Ziyi Zhang / Zhang Ziyi
- Incorrect accentuation : François Berléand / François Berleand / Francois Berleand / Francois Berléand

In my own database, I spent hours to correct thousands of problems like those, and I'm still not sure to have corrected all of them. I do not know whether a tool could help to verify all this, but it also could be very interesting.

Another excellent tool!

The downside is that it demonstrates how hopelessly screwed you the linking is...
I guess the upside is that it will give us many more hours to play with our collection

Gunnar's program can help there. An actor in my collection appears under three names:
Wayne Pére / Wayne Pere / Wayne Péré
with all three possible pairs of "Name/Credited as" present.

NameCheck found them all.

Yes, but not in all cases. I use very rarely "credited as" field, so, for me, unlinking data has to be found directly in names fields. I think I entered correctly all French accented names, but cannot be sure for other languages (Spanish, Norvegian, Swedish, Bulgarian...). And for Asian names, I can have missed some inversions (well, I'm sure for Li Li ... )

Version 1.1.0:
Double clicking a row in the detail window will select that title in DVD Profiler if it is running.

I had some problems with that routine in previous programs - restoring a minimized Profiler and selecting a title did not work, probably because of timing issues. I took some time to investigate this problem, and it now seems to work. I will apply the same fix to ProfilerQuery in 3.9.0.

I have also applied a few cosmetic fixes.

NameCheck 1.2.0

Now even better! New improved algorithm. Now also includes crew. Search function to find names in the result. HTTPJolie support for selecting profiles in DVD Profiler (if HTTPJolie available).

Note that this specifically targets "cross-contaminated" names, not all Credited-as. That means that if you have A credited as B and also B credited as A in your collection, then all credits for A and B will be listed.

Note also that "cross-contamination" can involve different persons. If, for example, you have Alan Hale credited as Alan Hale, Jr and also Alan Hale, Jr credited as Alan Hale, then all Alan Hale credits will be listed, both the 1892 and 1921 actor. So use with caution.

This should be enough to get you started investigating and/or correcting some common names.
