I have a question about the cover art for this DVD (UPC 027616-859167).  It seems there are two versions and some question about which is the original and which is the re-release (or were they released contemporaneously).

Here are the two covers in question.  The back covers appear to be identical.

I have the cover on the left, the one with the Movie Time banner.  I pre-ordered my DVD on 1/22/2001 from buy.com and it was released on 3/6/2001.

My question is, was this the first release of this DVD, and which cover was on the original release?

The cover on the left has been in the online database for some time now, and the cover on the right has recently been contributed as a replacement.

Of course not always correct, but for a first idea sometimes a google search helps. The most shops or websites show the current cover.

If you are referring to the Contributed Cover, Virus then those websites to which you refer are wrong. But at the same time as a business man I can understand why they would show the current cover, but that does NOT make it the ORIGINAL cover, and it is NOT the Original Cover, the existing image IS. The Movietime release was 3/16/2001, the same day I bought it, the blank Cover was released over a year when MGM made a decision tio eliminate Contemporary Classics, Movietime and other such banners. The same thing occurred with When Harry Met Sally and many other tiles in the MGM catalog that were released pre-2002

What Skip (or Prof. Kingsfield, should be Kingsford, lets BBQ!) also applies to MGM's Avant Garde Cinema collection. River's Edge, Hollywood Shuffle, Romeo is Bleeding and others originally carried that banner, now none do even all seem to still be in print. (check that, River's Edge is not showing up on dvdpricesearch, just the lines that represent OOP, but still cheap used on amazon/ebay)

Personally, I'm mostly glad they did away with the banners. Made the dvds look too much like the VHS's, esp. the "movie time" one. I'd be fully happy except for that collector mentality that makes me want the original version 99.9% of the time. I'm fine with my Romeo is Bleeding missing the banner, but have passed on River's Edge around 5 times already in search of a banner!

Of course they don't show the original cover. They show the current rerelease cover without the Movietime banner. So my guess was the same as your knowing: The left (Movietime is orignal release) and the right is rerelease.

As I said, it's not perfect, but in this case it worked.
