Is the API to access DVDProfiler database exposed? I was planning on writing an iPhone DVD cataloging application and was interested in finding out if I can use an API to search the DVDProfiler database using the UPC code.

Thanks!

Nope, never has been...never will be. It has always been password protected, as it should be. Invelos is working on an IPhone/IPod app.

There's an API and it exposes the database at least partially. You need to request access to the Plugin forums where you'll get the API.

I'm not sure though if Ken will allow the commercial use of his database to third party software.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

As far as I know the API to the server is not published. There is a documented API to the local database on the client (plugin API) as DJ Doena has already stated. For information about the possibility of either using the client API or the server API for commercial (or non commercial) purposes, I would recommend to contact Invelos directly. Use the contact link at the bottom of every page. We normal users can not know for sure, if Invelos is willing to license the API or not.

This is relatively simple to figure out. (1)Invelos is developing an IPhone/Ipod and probably now IPad Program. Now, if you are developing a progarm why would you grant a license to someone to use your API to develop a competing product, that wouldn't make a whole lot of business sense.

Not that I wouldn't agree what you said, but many of their actions/non-actions doesn't make a lot of business sense

There is a link in the contact section (found from the bottom of each page) relating to queries for business parnerships - this is the way to approach them.

I would expect you would have to pay a licence fee to access the data and would be given read only access, but it's really a discussion for the man himself.

As for whether it is good or bad for business, I think that it is entirely good (unless Ken signs up to a silly deal). It would not respsent competition if his recompence were comparable to that of a direct purchase of the product (minus overheads). E.g. he could sell the licence for as little as $15 per user and still be making more money that he would if he didn't enter into the deal.

I would like to get the API to make a way to import my DVDs I want to sell on my web site. This would make it so I would not have to enter all the info and upload the picture. With the API I could just import all the data into an oScomerce web site by entering the UPC code. Maybe I could do it and they could charge like $5 a month to access the database per oscomerce web site. I am sure others would like to have this feature on thier web site. I have looked for over a year and have not been able to find anyone doing this yet.

For commercial use you have to contact Invelos directly via the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page.
