Multi-season TV-series box sets: child profiles or not (BD Complete Battlestar Galactica) |

| Posted: | | | | Hi everyone,
I'd like to ask an informative question. I know the rules stipulate that for box sets of TV-series we are allowed but not required to enter child profiles per disc.
Now, I'm thinking of how to profile a box set that contains multiple seasons, each packed separately in the box, with multiple discs in each season's box. The case in point is the Blu-ray release of the Complete Battlestar Galactica set but this could apply to other multi-season box sets with seperate boxes per season in one all-encompassing box.
How would you prefer this to be profiled? 1. No child profiles: just keep one profile for the entire set with all credits in that profile 2. Add child profiles for each disc, so we would have: Parent > child profile (per disc) 3. Add child profiles for each season and then again for each season a child profile per disc, as such: Parent > child profile (per season) > child profile (per disc)
Personally, since each individual season has it's own box inside the 'complete' box, I would be in favour of the 3rd solution. It would give a nice incremental view of the entire set, going from the biggest denominator (full series), through the middle one (season) to the smallest one (disc). This would allow users to set a view date for each disc, but still keep a incremental view of the set.
I welcome any feedback or suggestions. My box set should arrive next week, so I can help profiling then (but wanted to know your views before getting started). | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies |

Quoting the contribution rules: Quote: In rare cases where multiple Complete TV Series are packaged together, the Box-set rules can be applied, treating each series like a single film - applying the above rules for it’s individual profile. This is the one exception where we apply the (film) box-set rules to a TV set, which means that for once, we do *not* put the cast and crew for the entire show into the parent. Instead, fully filled child profiles - one for each season - are required for once. And then grandchildren for those can indeed be added as well (allowed but not required). | | | Last edited: by T!M |

Main parent box has an EAN, each individual season has it's own slip inside the main box but there's no individual season EAN on them. They are available individually as well & that's how the complete box is currently set up but it's obviously not right & as far as I'm aware, there's no way at this time to do it correctly. |

| Posted: | | | | It's a PITA but it is not hard, just look at the Complete I Love Lucy in my own colection and Trace is correct about the season part. It all depends on the configuration of the set.

| Posted: | | | | I would do...
This...
"Input child profiles per season under the parent. Then again for each season add child profiles for per disc"
... if there is UPC Codes for each season.
If there isn't I would go with This...
"Input child profiles, per disc under the parent profile" | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | That's pretty much as I thought. As it currently stands, there's no contributable way to have a proper, parent, child, grand-child set up for these situations.
Thanks! |

Method 3 would be preferable, but unfortunately the Inidividual Season boxes do not have any UPC/EAN on them so you would have to create manual profiles for each season box, and therefore they would not be contributable. I've contributed child profiles for seasons 1-3 and Razor already. My Season 4.0 Disc 1 was unreadable so I stopped there. Someone else submitted Disc level profiles for Season 4.5 based off the inidiviual release of that on Blu-ray, so the cover images don't match the rest of the season boxes for those profiles. They can easily be swapped out for in people's local database for cover scans that match the rest of Season 4 from the complete set. | | | Chris |

| Posted: | | | | Thanks Tim, I missed that part of the rules. Very helpful indeed.
As pointed out by other users, there's indeed the issue that I don't have a UPC or disc ID to contribute, which makes it hard to make a parent, child, grandchild setup ... although according to the rules and user-feedback, that would seem to be the preferred setup.
Hmmm, I guess I'll wait till the boxset arrives to verify for sure, but it seems this won't be so easy to handle after all ... | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies |

| Posted: | | | | Yep. The original "Twilight Zone," for instance, has per season UPS because it's just the individually released seasons, plus a box. Sadly, this is not usually the case. This would be a welcome addition to the program, though. (The season children would have to be built into the parent somehow). |

It depends on the physical configuration. I was not happy when I opened up I love Lucy and discovered the arrangement was just a bunch of discs in a box, they, of course were individually marked, but that was it, so it is handled as I believe you have to handle Battlestar. NOw one thing to be very careful about is the Cover Art. For Lucy, they used some leftover discs from the Season sets to assemble the Complete Series, thus the Disc Ids were the same, which means while I maintain my Cover Art locally, I can't contribute it, except for the Main Title.

| Posted: | | | | Thanks everyone, that's some very useful feedback. So, if I may summarize your suggestions:
- created child profiles on a disc-level (using disc ID as identifier) and put the credits in there. These can be submitted as child profiles to the parent (the whole set) - For each disc profile, I can use a cover of the season box it belongs to, except for season 4.5 which already had a seperate release (I can however locally change the covers to the ones of the full season box set). - Then, locally create child profiles for each season, adding the covers and changing the configuration to a parent - child - grandchild configuration. This however can't be submitted since there is no UPC or disc ID for the season set boxes.
It may not be ideal but I think it's the best I can do to be able to contribute as much as possible online. The rest is up to each individual user then to reconfigure or not with season box child profiles.
Did I summarize correctly?
To answer Skips question: the physical configuration of the box set is, in this case, a big box, with in it 4 seperate boxes for each season, where each contains about 5 discs on average each. So physically, there is a distinction between the seasons. Unfortunately, each season box doesn't have it's own UPC, so I don't think I can contribute that info and will have to keep it locally.
I also agree with Ace_of_Seven. Not sure how exactly this would be programmable, since there's no unique identifier, but being able to contribute such configurations would be a welcome addition.
@cmaeditor: thanks for your hard work so far. I'll make sure to download your contributions and pick up from there. If I understood correctly, all that's missing then are the season 4.0 discs, the rest has already been submitted. | | | Blu-ray collection DVD collection My Games My Trophies | | | Last edited: by Taro |

- created child profiles on a disc-level (using disc ID as identifier) and put the credits in there. These can be submitted as child profiles to the parent (the whole set) I really don't see you you've reached this conclusion: the rules say to do it exactly the other way around. Per the rules, the parent needs to have child profiles for each season attached to it, not for each disc. Adding grandchildren for each subsequent disc to those child profiles is allowed, but not required, but: if the individual seasons don't have their own UPC/EAN, then you have to use the disc ID of the first disc in the set to create these child profiles - which rules out the possibility of creating grandchildren, because you've already used the disc ID of each first disc. That's unfortunate, but it is what the rules tell us to do (for online purposes at least). | | | Last edited: by T!M |
