I was doing updates this week and I have noticed something I really dislike.  People are taking away from the current cast info.  In many of my profiles cast members have a birth date to differentiate them from another actor or actress with the same name.  Lately I am finding cast updates that are just removing the birth date.  Therefore, I would like the ability to lock single cast members.  Sometimes on an update I want other cast info but have to lock the entire cast because I do not want to loose existing info on a single member.
I think maybe a check box when entering or editing a cast member which says "LOCK"

If they're removing the BY when it's necessary then people should be voting "No" so the request wouldn't be necessary.

If it's that you want a BY against every person in your local & don't want them removed by updates then I can see the need/want for this.

But that IS the problem.  People are not voting no when someone removes a birth date.  Add a period behind Jr. and the fight is on, remove a birth date and no one seems to really care unless they have more than person in their database with that name and have been using the birth date to differentiate.

I still think it would be a good idea, I know I have my local database somewhat differant than online, for instance I choose to list Rebecca Romijn as the common name and if there are any other changes to the cast it makes it a little more difficult to make changes becouse I need to do it manually, if I were able to lock that cast member it would be easier.

I agree that this would be useful feature, either this or be able to update selectively.
After all, the idea is that the onine serves as a common source, but that we can tailor our own database as we like it. If that gets lost with every error correction, the basic assumption is wrong.
Same for crew, apparently you can't update anything as soon as you have inserted any custom crew, or risk losing the lot.

Updates from online doesn't remove locally added BYs.

Agreed, but that is not the only kind of update you may not want to accept. That, and the fact that sometimes it is difficult to find what actually has been changed (if something is inserted, everything after that is marked as changed), occasionally makes it hard to accept an update, even if some of the changes do make sense.

That is incorrect.  If someone updates the profile and removes the actors birth year it will remove it from the local database unless you have the cast locked.

I made a test:

1. I added invented BY (2001) for Sean Penn
2. Made sure that no Cast or Crew locks were set
3. Downloaded a new profile that wasn't in my collection which included Sean Penn with no Birth Year

Result: New profile got the invented BY, it didn't remove it from any of existing ones.

4. Refreshed profile already in my collection with invented Sean Penn BY with an online profile that didn't have BY.

Result: Nothing happened, invented BY was still there

That is odd, because yesterday during an update of a film with Pamela Anderson I had the BY removed and that is what sparked starting this thread.

Well Pamela Anderson isn't listed in the Accepted BY thread so perhaps its something that just isn't in the online and you just have locally? Why not provide the documentation for this BY and resubmit it and get it put in the Accepted BY Thread

I take it you would also like me to do this for any other actor that may have this problem as Peter Graves did does as well.  Your idea is well and good and I will try it please point me to the "Accepted AS" area.  But I don't understand why you are more interested in doing things as they are instead of making them better.  This is not a hard change to make and we would ALL profit from it.

i agree that partial cast/crew updates would be nice but the issue of birth years getting removed could stem from it simiply not being in the system. if it's put in the system and propogated to, in this case, pamela anderson, then updates wouldn't remove it it.

the thread i refer to is here and it contains a list of actors that share a name and documentation for the BY. This helps keep track of what birth years are legit and which are bogus. there have been issues in the past brought up with how birth years are accepted and propogated and it's probably an area something need to be done with. I think that any contribution notes for a BY should be attached to the actor and not a specific profile...but that's (kind of) a different issue.

It's not a matter of not making things better (which only Ken can change) but using what we can control to make things better/smoother until Ken does so. For instance, checking the above mentioned thread I can see that Peter Graves is listed in that thread; one has a 1911 BY the other 1926

That thread doesn't change the fact how the program works. If the online db has an actor without BY and you do an update, it doesn't remove the BY from your local db, never has.

Correct, that's how it's always been.

I would support the original feature request though, and add crew to it as well.

I agree  the program has always left BYs in the local db when a update comes through with them removed.

But I agree that it could be useful to be able to lock some cast and leave others to be updatabale..
