So, I have a studio question for the silent film The Thief of Bagdad.  The only credit on my DVD is "Copyright 1924 Douglas Fairbanks."

A quick check of the internet shows the studio to likely be named Douglas Fairbanks Pictures.

(I say likely because not everything one reads on teh interwebs is true  )

Would it be acceptable to contribute this (the studio field was blank except for the DVD distributor) or should I keep this local only?

Or does anyone have a ... shall we say, less public domain? ... release of this film with different credits?

Do you have the 1924 silent film starring Douglas Fairbanks?  Because I believe the Criterion collection released the 1940 Technicolor film of the same name.  Those sound like the correct studios for the 1940 film.  I'm talking about the silent film.

I updated the profile a while ago in Region 4 Australia. Details are Region 0 Locality Australia DVD 9318500006905.

My contribution notes were:

"Added CoO, added DVD Release Date (See: http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/Reviews/Reviews.asp?ID=5036), corrected runtime from disc, added SRP (See: http://atlanticdvd.com.au/index_stuffer.cfm?view.cfm?id=5121~content), Updated Studios, Added the Biography for Douglas Fairbanks to Features as Production Notes/Bios, corrected Video Format, added Intertitles as English Subtitles, added Music Only Orchestral Score to Audio Tracks, corrected paragraph formating of Overview to match the back cover of the DVD, added Disc id, added Douglas Fairbanks (Credited as Elton Thomas his psuedonym) to wiriting credits Source: Audio Essay on DVD by R. Dixon Smith), updated Cast to exactly match end credits on DVD."

The Studio in the profile is Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corp. I remember adding what are now Media Companies but I can't remember whether or not I added Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corp.

I will check my version when I can dig it out and let you know.

I have had a quick look at it, including listening the the Audio Essay, looking at biography for Douglas Fairbanks and checking the credits. I cannot pick up where I got it from if I did contribute it. Bear in mind that I updated an existing profile that came across from Intervocative.

don't know if Douglas Fairbanks Pictures is legit for a studio or not, but if it is, the Corp. should be removed per the rules

Some further info FWIW:

In 1916 Douglas Fairbanks, Sr established his own production company, The Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation.

In 1919 he formed the United Artists Corporation along with Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, and D.W. Griffith.

This site credits The Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation with the production of The Thief of Bagdad.

This site credits United Artists Corporation as distributors.

More useful information can be found at The Douglas Fairbanks Museum site here.

Agreed, but as I don't own this release, I'll leave that up to Telecine.

Oops...didn't realize there was another version out there.  You're right, I do have the 1940 version.

Right.  And it was definitely distributed by United Artists, which was owned in part by Fairbanks and his wife, Mary Pickford.

The R2 Eureka edition (5-060000 401059) is obviously based on the Australian (Melbourne mentioned).

The end credits are "new" not the original ones if they ever existed. Opening credits only mention (c) by Douglas Fairbanks.

It was restored by IML in Melbourne, Australia. You may be correct about the credits being added during the restoration but there is no real way of knowing at this point.

Seems pretty obvious: typeface may look oldish but it's a "fake": Gaylord Carter Musical Settings 1975?, it's all a bit too neat looking for the '20s. Credits consisted of a few persons in those days, maybe 5, 6, here we have more than 20. I don't see the the title writer who was a.f.a.i.k. credited in those days, one of the few who were credited really.

Only the opening screen with the titles in quotes is the real stuff.
