Personally, I would like to enter him as visual effects. Unfortunately a strict interpretation of the rules do not allow functional equivalents. Another reason to change the rules.

As RHo indicates, a strict interpretation of the rules says we can't enter him.  If it were me, because I know what he did on this film, I would enter him as Creature Designer.  He did, afterall, create the giant octopus.

You can enter him with custom roles, and keep it local. No problem...

If it's not a role in our chart exactly written, then they must not be important.  Who is this Harryhausen fella, anyway?

He would be visual effects in my local.  Creature design if I really went all out, but he did more than simply design the stuff, he did all the stop motion photography as well.  If that isn't visual effects, I don't know what is.

As far as I'm concerned, Harryhausen alone is one of the primary reasons for adding this crew type.  I guess that's irony.

Actually, I can enter him however I wish and still keep it local.  There isn't a thing I have to contribute.

The light bulb turns on.  Where I feel that creature designer is something more than visual effects, you seem to feel the opposite.  Now, at least, I know where you are coming from.

I'd use the Visual Effects credit, myself---it's plainly an effects credit.

I think interpretation of the rules is the Screeners's job, it's not up to us to say if it must be "strict" or not.
Having said that, I am not sure what I would do. Maybe you could explain in your notes and let the Screeners decide?
BTW, here's the contents of an academic course in  Technical Effects for Performance

Quote:
If you are interested in pursuing a career in providing technical effects for performance then this highly creative, specialist course may be for you. The emphasis on shared learning across the three subject areas will allow you to from creative partnerships, reflecting the essentially collaborative nature of the industry.  Performance will be central to your work, developing both individually and within small groups and working to given scripts towards speculative productions.
Taught by highly skilled visiting professionals and dedicated staff, you will explore the creation of three-dimensional constructed images for the human form and its surrounding space within a range of performance contexts. The course is interdisciplinary and covers a broad spectrum: from masks to realistic prosthetic limbs; from armour fabrication to special effects costumes used on 'creature' films; from large carnival costumes to small stop-motion animation puppets.

You will develop a wide range of vocational skills, which include: life sculpting, life drawing, casting and mould making, core moulds, vac forming, fabrication, polyester carving, applied pattern cutting, body padding, puppetry and introduction to animatronics, fibreglass, foam latex, hair replacement and silicon.

Cultural Studies will introduce you to different perspectives of performing arts, visual and fashion imagery. Design is centred on the development of processes and ideas, including the interpretation of text into designs for film and theatre. Your understanding of Technical Effects for performance is deepened with the second year industry linked project. This includes work on film sets as well as work on theatre productions. In addition, the Performance Project in your third year showcases your ability against the expectations of a professional theatre environment and will showcase your work to potential employers.
Technical Effects graduates have gone on to work on projects such as the Harry Potter films, international theatre and opera productions and in specialist workshops such as Jim Henson's Creature Shop, Animated Extras and Asylum.

I did include Harryhausen as Visual Effects for the U.S. R1 audits I did, for Earth VS the Flying Saucers, 20 Million Miles to Earth, and It Came from Beneath the Sea. I thought I noted that he was credited as Technical Effects in the contribution notes, but I see that I did not. All 3 were approved.
