| Posted: | | | | OK, running into a problem here in regards to the visual effects credits for the first Jurassic Park film.
This is how these 4 are credited.
Full Motion Dinosaurs by Dennis Muren Live Action Dinosaurs by Stan Winston Dinosaur Supervisor Phil Tippet Special Dinosaur Effects Michael Lantieri
Later on in the credits there are 13 people who are credited with "Special Effects".
The first 4 won an Academy Award for their Visual Effects work on this film.
However, according to the rules none of those first 4 could be credited since they have unconventional job titles. Well except perhaps Lantieri who does have "Effects" in his job title so he could be credited I assume.
Would you contribute those first 4 Visual Effects people or only the lesser known 13 "Special Effects" people. |

I think that if you can document the bolded row, you can also credit that people with Visual Effect. | | | Updated List of Accepted Birth Years |

| Posted: | | | | My question is: how far away from the defined credits are we to go?
No denying that if anyone deserves to be credited for Visual Effects for Jurassic Park they are among the four listed here. But were I profiling JP i'd have sighed and shaken my head but not included these four because the credits weren't even close to those defined. I can be flexible but this would have pushed it for me. Nor would i have included subordinates with valid credits ("Special Effects") because that would just be silly without the important creative guys.
And without a Rule change Oscar nominations or wins shouldn't mean automatic inclusion. I profiled a film a couple months back that won an Oscar for Visual Effects. The four winners included to Visual Effects Supervisors and a couple other guys that seemed randomly selected from among the rest of the credits (one was some sort of camera operator IIRC). I included the ones that matched our credits and left out the others.
Not sure how i'd vote. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| Posted: | | | | I am sure I am not a good one to talk as I do very little to no Crew Credits... for the most part I leave that to others with more knowledge then I. But I personally would only do what is exactly on the chart in the rules... no matter who that leaves out.
As for voting I don't vote on crew updates at all if it is a crew only update (unless it is painfully obvious like someone saying Crew from IMDB). | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | I'm starting to think that they used Full Motion & Live Action to denote the way the dinos appear on screen.
Full Motion = When you see the complete body of the dino in full motion, ie CGI.
Live Action = When you only see a portion of the dino, usually in closeups. ie large scale puppets/animatronics.
On a side note. With the increasing cast/crew data the program is going further and further away from just a dvd database. To be honest if all we cared about was the dvd then cast/crew wouldn't have ever been added. Like it or not we basically have a movie database now. And as such we really need to start to understand all the variations of specific job titles to fully and accurately do the profiles in the first place,
(Sorry for the rant). |

(Sorry for the rant). This statement makes no sense at all . We profile films on DVD/BD/HD-DVD. These films have Cast & Crew. If we were only profiling shinny discs that would be something else . | | | My WebGenDVD online Collection |

| Posted: | | | | I know that they won an Academy Award for their Visual Effects work, but this credit isn't for 'visual effects', it is for a specific job...creating the dinosaurs. To me, at least for Dennis Muren and Stan Winston, that screams 'Creature Designer'. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | Still doesn't negate the fact that as a community we can't fully agree on what is or isn't allowed to be profiled. And if we are to fully and accurately do the profiles in the first place then we must understand all of the variations of specific job titles even if they aren't exactly listed in the rules.
On a related note I think it's rather absurd to think that "we" know more about specific crew members than the Academy Awards do.
But hey, if that's what you guys want, incomplete data. Then fine by me. |

Nice sentiment, but it will never happen...and shouldn't. If people are required to know everything about every crew job, they simply won't bother contributing. The easiest method is to enter the credits that are a match, or a fairly close match, to the credits in the chart. Quote: On a related note I think it's rather absurd to think that "we" know more about specific crew members than the Academy Awards do. Who said we know more about specific crew members than the Academy does? Not that it matters as we don't enter credits based on Academy criteria. We enter credits based on how they are listed in the end credits. Again, if we have to know exactly what they did before we can enter them, very few people will enter crew credits. Quote: But hey, if that's what you guys want, incomplete data. Then fine by me. We already have people who only contribute small amounts of data. The vast majority of updates I see these days are for 'Rating Details', 'Media Companies' and 'Overview formatting'. It is a breath of fresh air when I see a profile that includes cast and crew changes. To further complicate the entry of crew, which is what it seems like you want to do, will further pollute that breath. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. If you watch some of the 'making of' specials, you will find that that is exactly what they did...which is why I would give Stan a Creature Designer credit. He designed those creatures. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
