Hello all,

Disclaimer: Before posting this question, I did search the forum and the 'faq' with no success

Ok with that out of the way, here is my question:

As you guys might have seen, I have been busy updating my database (transferring one disc at a time into this DVD Profiler - love it!)... I have hit this problem:

Example: Family Guy Vol 6 has those two different rating on the back (for upc 024543541691) "-14A" (for Canada) and "G" (for the USA? I am assuming here).... which one do I chose, the more restrictive one of the two? or the "G"?

Some other movie/TV Serie do not even have a rating - the NR or NOT RATED is not even printed anywhere (to which I indicate: NR to be safe)..

Although I have submitted some with the Canadian Standard "14A", most of my submission were voted yes.. more recently, I got a few 'no' (yup, I did withdrew those submissions to avoid 'conflict').. Which one to use!

Depends on the locality of the profile.
If you downloaded a US profile, add the US rating. If it's a Canadian profile, use the Canadian rating.

I've just checked that Family Guy set and the only locality available is a US one - so it gets the US rating.
If you want to use the Canadian one, simply create a Canadian profile for the same set - and that profile can have the Canadian rating.

Edit: and you were right about the NR ones - if there is no rating on the cover or on the DVD, we don't list one even if a rating is available elsewhere.

Like northbloke says, it depends on the locality of the profile.  In the above case, use "G" if the locality is US or "-14A" if the locality is Canada.  The fact that one is more restrictive than the other isn't as critical as which audience (locality) the DVD profile is intended for.

mmmm that might be my prob.. I have noticed that when I was typing the UPC, sometimes there was a few title with the same UPC, however, clearly identified as 'Canadian' or without...

I know need to learn on 'how to create a new submission with the 'Canadian' flavour... phew...

Thanks for your inputs guys!

Oh Almighty...

After reviewing and testing something which was written in a comment above (i.e.: Make it Canadian)... this begs one last question.. do you guys think that, if I wish to have the Canadian details existing on the Packaging that I create a "new" submission for the one I own????

I know that as I was adding titles to my collection, there was time when I was offered choices a few choices (Title -Widescreen ... Title - Widescreen (Canada) .. Title - Widescreen (Hong Kong)  .... and I was selecting Canada.... not thinking that these were profile with the Canadian Flavour...

I know I was rambling.. but in a nutshell, do you think I should submit new profile for the Canadian changes??

Thanks guys!

Yes, if the UPC does not have an existing profile in the Canada locality, you should make that contribution. That is the only way for the different ratings to get properly profiled for the 2 localities that the UPC is used in.

Quite right... but don't forget that even if the product is identical you should also change:

1) The release date if it is different for Canada
2) The SRP so it is correct for Canada and used the Canadian $
3) The theatrical distributor if it's different for its Canadian release
It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong

There's no way Family Guy is rated G in the US. That's a film rating and it's a TV show and the content would merit a harder rating.

I am looking at the packaging of Vol 6 of Family Guy and the following can be found printed on the back:
UPC: 0-24543-54169-1
- G General (in a black box) .. I am assuming US standard; and
- 14A (in a yellow triangle with the Canadian rating rating clearly labeled around that triangle

Now another serie, just for the heck of it ;-) American Dad! Volume 3
UPC0-24543-50436-8
- G General (in a black box) .. I am assuming US standard; and
- 14A (in a yellow triangle with the Canadian rating rating clearly labeled around that triangle

I even saw rating of (R) with very hard warning attached to it (Canadian system) , yet.. there was a Not Rated in a black box... that is why I am converting my database to the Canadian system .. after all, that is where I am living :-)

I am really not inventing that.. I can take a picture with the newspaper beside it to show that I am no 'high' haha

Regards,

E

I'm not sure what that is. It's not a U.S. ratings logo. Go to http://www.filmratings.com and click the ratings guide to see those.

Every countries have their own rating for movies... the US is not the 'standard' that the rest of the world has to adopt :-)

Also, you want to have a good laugh! Check UPC 0-97368-53374-5 (Drawn Together: Season 3 Uncensored!
- The rating is 'NOT RATED' in the US
- 14A For Canada

My point is not to say that we have a better system.. far from it (heck, I would have rated that TV serie 18+) .. what I am trying to illustrate is that we all have different system governing 'cinema' in general...

Oh .. forgot to mention that my 'faux pas' should not happen again.. When I was explain here that I could change the Rating as long as the proper country is selected with the UPC!!! What a great invention ahha ;-)

We don't have a field called "theatrical distributor". The field is called "Theatrical Release Studio" and that shouldn't varie by dvd locality. Do you mean "Media Companies" field?

not at all.. it is the same in North America.. what is the only thing which differ is the Rating (If I look in Provinces - Equivalent of a State in the USA), each could have their own Rate.. furthermore, in the Province of Quebec, you cannot buy a DVD in any store which did not get rated by the Provincial system... as you can see, rating is taken more in depth depending where you live!

That is not a US rating.  If you look at the fine print in the box is says, "VISA GÉNÉRAL".  That is the Quebec rating given by Régie du Cinéma.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.
