I looked at the rules, but didn't find the answer, so I thought I'd ask.  I know where my opinion stands, but I'd like to see what the rest of you think.

I have a box set of 3 films.  The films (child profiles) are just fine.  The box profile does not include genre or CoO.  All 3 films have the same genre and the same CoO, so  I added said genre and CoO to the box (after all, all contents of it are the same).  Should I contribute this change or keep it local?

Or, in other words, should a box set of films also get entries for genre and CoO?

I would not include them, however, there is nothing in the rules that prohibit them.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Personally, my opinion is that I can't actually watch the box so information like that is of no value.  I've been stripping all that info out of my box parents locally.

Can you explain what information your stripping out besides genre?

I think the problem is that the Box Sets section of the rules needs to be more specific here. It currently says nothing about not adding, or removing certain information. Right now, it's very specific about what is not to be included however, and there is nothing mentioned about genres or CoO in box sets.

CoO and genres may be added to the parent profile of a box set as long as the data is valid for the complete box set. Where the rules leave room, I would use the same reasoning for every piece of data of a box set profile. As long as the data is valid for the complete set, add it to the profile.

I'm also stripping out video and audio information, as well as features.  The way my collection is set up, the box is just that...a box.  I can't watch it.  It is simply a container for DVDs that I can watch.  Consequently, my parent profiles tend to look like empty shell containers as well.

This is the way I see it too... I haven't worked on it yet... but once I do my parent profiles will only be basically cover images and overview.

Another thing that I'm stripping is the rating, however this is a clear rules violation for the online.  I understand why its there but it does me no good knowing that at least one item in the set had a rating of <fill in the blank>.  The only thing that matters to me is what the rating is of the particular feature that I'm going to watch.

I thought we only included a rating for a box set if the box set itself had a rating, or if at least one of the features was Adult.  Otherwise I thought we listed the set as NR.  I'm pretty sure that's the way the rules read.

Like, The Marlon Brando Collection is listed as NR, even though one of the 4 films included in the set has an R rating.

It would appear the rule has changed with 3.5.  The old rule stated to assign the highest rating of any child to the box.  In your example, the Brando box would have been given a rating of R under the old rule.

Are you also reffering to TV box sets? What about runtime?

I think they talk about movie box sets, TV box sets are a different deal, because child profiles are allowed but not mandatory. So things like cast lists and runtimes may exist on both levels.

I for examply set the runtime on a TV series box to "" and only use the runtimes on child level profiles since that are the profiles I set a watched flag on. And to have it twice would ruin my runtime statistics (I just broke the 250,000 minutes barrier ).

But I do contribute the accumulated times on the box profile.

I am talking about how I will be doing both movie and TV Series boxsets... but I am also talking about locally... as I know it isn't per rules. So for me locally I will have only cover images and overview. everything else will be blanked out.

OK... very true... I will be leaving 3 things in the parent profile.
