It seems from a Google search of the forum that this has been an issue for some time and new users just have to figure it out.

The rules state, in part:

"List DVDs encoded for at least Regions 1-6 as "All." Regions 7-8 are ignored for the purposes of DVD Profiler."

I understand (now) that what is intended is that no region is ticked.  However, doing that does not yield the display "All", but rather, "None."  This is confusing for newbies such as myself.

Could this please be clarified in the rules and/or in the program.  Thanks.

What I do is if I have a disc like that is follow the back cover. If the back cover says "none" I tick no regions, if the cover says "All" I tick all of them. As they mean the same thing anyway it makes no difference to the contribution.
However I too would very much like an "All" icon to be displayed. And you're right the rules are vague - in many places not just that one!

Edit: just to try and prevent irrelevant discussions, there are differences in terms of actually encoding DVDs between "All" region and "0" region discs, but it's totally unrelated to how the disc reacts in a player and how we report them. As far as Profiler is concerned there is no difference.

I can only re-state my opinion that Ken should handle DVDs like Blu-rays to avoid confusion. If a user ticks R1-R6, the setting should automatically revert to None=All=R0 as it does when someone ticks A+B+C.

I only have one blu-ray so far, so don't know how things are different. But from a purely personal point of view I prefer being able to mark "All" and "None" differently.

Got to agree with north here. Although both ways should play in any player, they are technically different.

the problem with this (and I hadn't realised that Blu Rays did this) is that my father only has a R2 player whilst I have a multiregion dvd player. When I take over a dvd to show him I need one that will play in a R2 machine. So if a dvd is coded as ALL REGION in dvd profiler it won't show up in a search for R2 DVDs - so I change this manually so that All the regions are ticked.

And then I find it when looking for a R2 disc.

Interesting - I didn't know the search worked like that, though it's pretty obvious once it's mentioned!
It sounds like the rule needs to be changed to tell us to tick all boxes when entering these titles. Either that or Ken modifies the search to include titles where no boxes at all have been ticked.

Or add a tick box to search those marked region free the same as when you add by title.

No, technically they are the same. Look at them with a tool that shows the region code.

No, technically they are different in that one has codes & the other doesn't.

I use DVDInfoPro and have looked at a lot of DVDs using it.  I do not remember ever seeing a DVD that didn't show at least one Region Code.  Those that are considered "all region" or "no region" appear as 1,2,3,4,5,6 (or 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8) -- never blank.

Sigh. It has been explained so many times.

There is not a single DVD with no regions enabled (that would be 0xFF in the region mask). No player would play that DVD. Nevertheless, the terms "no regions" or "not region encoded" or "Region 0" are used to refer to a DVD that is encoded to play in all regions (that would be 0x00 in the region mask).

The region mask is an 8 bit field where disabled regions are set to 1 and enabled regions are set to 0.

Sorry I can only go by information that I have personally come across and/or experienced first hand which suggests that they can choose to flag them to a region or to not flag them.

This is exactly the irrelevant debate I wanted to avoid.
As I said, how a disc is encoded makes no difference to how it's treated in Profiler.
Regardless, an "All" icon and/or an update of the rules would be very helpful.
