I would love to see a genre field where you could make your own genre titles instead of just the ones that are there.

For example a "DISASTER" genre for movies like "Perfect Storm", "Armaggedon", and "Sunshine" etc.

I could get behind that.  The only problem would be that the custom genres couldn't be uploadable.  Otherwise people would have a meltdown fighting over genres.

I noticed in another posting, that someone had said there is a way to change the existing genre's into one that you want. So basically changing one of theirs that you WON'T use to one that YOU WANT.

I'm still looking but have not found out how to do that. If anyone has that info I would be very grateful if they would share it. And yes I realize that I can't Upload my collection if I do that.

Thanks for the assist.

I believe they were referring to editing the unused genres in one of the translation files to whatever genres you prefer and loading that translation file by default.

Thanks for the response!  Sounds right, but I guess I Don't know what a TRANSLATION FILE is and how to find it to change it.

Thanks

Havent read the thread in question but I think it probably involved editing the translation file.

Tools- Options- System- Click the edit button.

In the highlight string box enter the name of the genre you want to replace, then change it to what you want it to be.

Thanks to bringing this to my attention and thanks to the person who posted it originally, its a great idea.  I'll have to see if there are any genres that I don't use...(edit) its gotta be the accessories genre!

Edit: Arr Max beat me to it, well thats HOW you do it anyway.

This is indeed a nice suggestion, but it should definitely be considered a personalization option and not be submittable. Maybe it could even be one of the fields available when you select to personalize a newly added DVD.

I know I would use such an option.

Oh yeah forgot to say, this only affects your local db so you dont have to worry about not contributing.  For example if you change drama to 'hardcore porn'...or something    it will still show up as drama for everyone but you.  Your online collection would also be unaffected I believe.

Another interrim option (or permanent, should personalized user-defined genres never make it into the program) could be to use tags. Other than your genres not showing up in the genre section of the program it should work the same as having personalized genres.

But if I download that profile it will show Drama in genres. If he changes comedy to disaster and contributes say "Perfect Storm" everyone would get that profile with comedy in genre, no? The database would be in a mess...

You are right... it would still not be something you could contribute. In my opinion the best answer for this right now is the tags.

No I dont believe it works like that.  He wouldnt be changing any profiles, just a setting of his local program.  Basically just changing the way the program displays the genre.  The genre doesnt change...just the word thats used to represent it on your machine.

but what he changes it too might not be right for all the profiles he marks with it.

Say if he (for example) changes comedy  to disaster then puts comedy (his Disaster) on Armageddon... he couldn't contribute the change to the online database as it would look to everyone else that he is marking Armageddon as a comedy.

so the only point we are making... from that point on he couldn't do contributions for the genres using either of the genres he may change.

WE could easily get so wrap[ped up in genre it would be become near unamageable, we are getting close to that in the language category already and still people want more. You can set ANY Genre you wish via the Tag system.

I see what you're getting at now Pete, I was looking at it from the wrong angle.

I will probably still use the Accessories genre for something else tho, locally of course.
