Hello,

I'm sure this has come up before, but I didn't find any references to it... here goes:

I've purchased "Live free or Die Hard" here in Quebec, and the UPC is not matched to any current entry in the database, problably due to Special, bilingual covers, etc... Is there a way to assign the UPC to an existing profile entry, or at least be able to copy the information, without having to go through the manual labor of re-inserting every piece of information? 99% of the time, its just the DVD Cover that changes, not the actual contents of the disc... This has been occuring with several blockbuster DVDs here...

Thanks Guys (and Gals)!

Yannick.

Look up the same movie that most closely matches all the data as your DVD and add it to your collection. Make any changes as needed so that all the data is correct then change the UPC symbol to the one you have in hand. To change the UPC go to “DVD” (same place you go to add a DVD to your collection) and at the bottom of the list is “Change UPC”.

Make sure you put in your contribution notes that you got the info off of the other profile and give the UPC.

From what I see here, you may want to make sure to change Locality as well, if you use a non-Quebec profile.

Will the contributing of the new instance of the movie (with a different locality and UPC) overwrite the original profile copied? I've been witholding contributions for these entries as I don't want to overwrite anything...

Thanks all for the quick replies!

I usually download more than one profile of the same movie/TV series and do a quick check on them. If I find obvious errors, I discard that profile and try another one. Sometimes I look at who contributed it and at the Contribution notes.
The "Name Variants for Cast and Crew" plugin helps too, as you can easily find out slight differences in names between profiles that can reveal typing slips or other kinds of mistakes.
Eventually I choose the profile I think is best, change its UPC (and Locality, if necessary) and use it as the ground for my new profile, verifying all the data that are more likely to be different, especially if your are going to contribute the new profile to the Online database. Ideally you should check everything, including Cast and Crew, and verify all the data from the DVD itself, but AFAIK copying Cast and Crew from another profile is OK  as long as you clearly say it in your Contribution Note.

Wouldn't it be easier to do the profile from scratch without copying data from other profiles? Only than you can be sure to contribute correct data. There are too many faulty profiles around at the moment.

Depends.

Anyone can make errors. Checking other profiles sometimes helps even if you are going to do a new profile from scratch.

That's why I suggested that, if you choose to copy, you should:
1. Check the profiles before using them... for instance, is it a blatant copy from IMDb?  Does it contain obvious errors in crew roles? Is the Contributor a user you generally trust? Did (s)he document sources? and so on...
2. Compare existing profiles and choose the most accurate;
3. Verify as much data as you can, ideally a full audit;
4. Anyway, state what you did in your Contribution notes, so others will know what you took/verified yourself from the DVD and what you copied from another profile, and will verify themselves if they want.

Yep, but I think it's better to start from scratch with a blank profile (at the moment) and use other profiles when your in doubt.

That's perfect

But if you go this way it doesn't matter if you start with a blank profile or use data from other profiles as a basis (IMHO). It's a lot of work!

@gleepwurp: You can copy data from other profiles but it's better (it's a must?) to verifiy them. Try out what's more convenient for you.

Thanks Guys,

I agree it makes more sense to use a blank profile if you're not going to have time to do a full audit. But if you're doing a full audit, its faster to copy an existing one and just fix the differences than redo everything from scratch...

Thanks Guys, I never imagined I would get as many posts! This is certainly a very active forum!

Appreciated,

Yannick.
