Just a quick dumb question.

Should we be voting yes to Disc ID's with no listed source. I understand you can easily obtain these by inserting the disc in a DVD-ROM but it just seems to me that the contributor should differentiate between  that method and a specific program. I know I am being anal.

Example the current contribution for I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.

Thanks
Brian

Is there another way to input disc IDs except directly through DVDP?  If there is, it still baffles me why anyone would do it.

you can only verify the layers and the region code. dvdprofiler just gets the disc id. no other way. You could list dvdprofiler as the source

Although if you're adding if they are SL or DL you should state your source.

Whenver I enter a disc ID I always say, "Disc ID added using Profiler and then I verify the Dual Layer (DL) or Single Layer (SL) using VSO Inspector. " I used to just verify the layers, but ever since someone voted no (and it got declined) for not saying how I entered the ID, I've always said how.

You can actually visually verify that it's DL or SL.  DL has two bar codes on the center ring.

Another way to veify that a DVD is DL is to look in your My Computer when it's in your DVD drive for setting the disc ID. If the DVD is larger than 4.7GB (The size of a SL DVD) then ir's DL.

But they're not always easy to see.  Some of us have less than 20/20 vision, you know.

I always just turn on dvdshrink and see what numbers pop up when I open the disc. 100% = single layer, anytrhing less = dual.
Didn't know about that visual trick, has it been confirmed to be universal or could there be exceptions to it?
It used to be real easy in the early days of dvd. If the playing surface was gold, it was dual. If silver, single. Now you don't see as many gold ones and most DL are silver.

That's why I wear glasses.

As to exceptions?  No idea.  I read about the visual thing in submissions so I asked about it and they said there was two for DL.  I looked at a DVD and it had two!

Personally, I think it's all a conspiracy theory.

Personally I would have PM'd the individual and asked what other way there was of entering the disc id. That was a totally pointless no vote.

I would have, but it was one of those last minute votes and I didn't get a chance to contact them. I was  when the vote got declined for that lone "no" vote.

When I put a DVD into the computer, press Add Disc, then press Set sometimes my computer outlines the section Dual Layer. Is it possible that the computer is able to identify, and do so accurately, if a DVD is dual layer or not? Has anyone ever noticed this before?

Weird. I would guess the computer would know if it's DL as you can see how big the info file on the disc is in properties. How it knows to click the dual layer checkbox when entering is beyond me.
