As I went through my unvoted pending updates I saw a contribution that removed the data from Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition (Anchor Bay), claiming this was a boxset.

Is this really a boxset? I dont think so, but a lot of users voted for a yes...
In the contribution rules, "The term "Box Set" is used to define any release that includes more than one film".
But this is just one film, only different cuts.

If it is considered as a boxset... what about Clerks 10th Anniversary Edition (Theatrical Cut and Directors Cut on different disks) or Mallrats 10th Anniversary (TC and DC on different sides) then? And certainly many more that I dont know of or I dont remember just now.

What do you think of it?

The different cuts of the film are considered so different that they are classed as different films, so it has been set up as a boxset and all the child profiles have the info.
You're right - it is a bit of an oddity, and unfortunately there's currently no way to let a user know it's a boxset when they choose to add the profile to their collection. It was ages before I discovered that Brazil: The Criterion Edition had child profiles.
I think you can class these as exceptions to the rules more than anything, as most DVDs that contain alternate cuts are classed as normal profiles.

I've vote no on this update, but the majority of the other vote the contrary and I can't understand their reason to vote "yes". For me this is not a boxset for the reason that you write. A boxset countain 2 or move DVD or 2 different movie on each side of a DVD. The movie in this edition are the same basicly, just different cut of Dawn of the Death.

You're right - in the strictest sense, this does go against the rules - and it's a shame that boxsets aren't handled better in the program. In fact, I've just had to vote no on two profiles because they want to add cast & crew to the parent profile - and what's the bets those users didn't realise there were child profiles available?
I think if we were told that child profiles were available when we added a profile to our collection, we'd have less of these submissions as the users would be aware there was more information available.
Maybe we should suggest that in these cases, where a boxset only contains different cuts of the same film, that they be treated like TV boxsets - both the parent and child profiles contain the info - that may satisfy both parties.

There is a way, althought not that abvious -->
Before you add a DVD, preview it and look at the Box Set field. If it lists UPC's or Disc ID's, it has child profiles.

While I have it set up as a Box Set myself, I can understand that others might now want to do that.

Following the logic, that removing data is easier than adding it, the parent should stay as is and people who set it up as Box Set can quickly delete all unwanted data.

(You might not hear the same answer from me asking about Brazil, though )

I understand the argument that the cuts really differ in style and pace and what not.
But different cuts from other films do that too, when for example a studio changes the movie dramatically from the vision the director had.
Lets take Alien 3 as a popular example for this problem.
If there was an existing Director's Cut and it'd be released as a Special Edition with both cuts, would you declare it as a boxset, too? I wouldn't because it basically is the same film and consists of the same material. Just another take on it.

I think sets with multiple versions/cuts of the same film should be treated the same way as a TV season set:

All the details in the parent profile and allow child profiles of the individual discs for those that want them.

Yes, that would be a good compromise.
I wonder if it also worth creating a new pinned thread with a list of these profiles that don't conform to the rules.
I think the problem is, as we get new users coming on board, they're hitting the same stumbling blocks over and over again. If we had a list of "oddity" profiles, they're more likely to leave them alone rather than try and change them to match the rules and then get voted down.

Yep, I think that's a good idea.
And when someone wants it to be a boxset, they can delete the data, as ya_shin already mentioned.

I think northblokes idea with the pinned thread is good, too.
There are certainly more of those strange exeptions and it could be useful for new users.

I would propose Ben-Hur style profiles.
