I was just wondering what you guys use to determine the audio format of the audio tracks.

I know that most could possibly be verified using your standard dvd player on your computer, but I also suspect that some of them mistakenly identifies Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono as Dolby Digital Stereo...

Is there a nifty app. out there for this task?

PS: The subject is obviously: How to definetely determine the audio format
That'll teach me to proof read things

DVD Shrink does a good job of ID'ing audio tracks, and I use my AV receiver as a backup since it picks up everything up to 6.1 DTS.

I don't remember exactly (haven't had DVD Shrink installed for a while), but I suppose the Dolby Digital 2.0 Mono vs Dolby Digital Stereo will also fail. I understand, that that one can only be dtermined "manually". The below instructions were posted on the IVS forum a while back:

Load it into a sound editor and invert one channel. If you get zero output (you may get a very week signal if they are not matched 100%) it's mono. If you hear anything  it's stereo.

Using nero wave editor.
Load a chunk of the audio, you sould see two wave forms.
Select 'tools', 'stereo processor'
Set the outputs to Left 100% Right -100% Hit preview, if it's mono you will hear nothing, or almost nothing. If it's stereo you will hear quite a bit.

Or play it on a system with Pro Logic engaged.  If it's DD mono 2.0 the sound will come only from the center channel.  If DD stereo 2.0 it's come from the mains (and to some extent the surrounds and center).

I always use my Receiver the detect of if a stream is 2.0 Stereo or Surround. I have a Harman Kardon AVR 335. If it's Stereo it will display 2/0/.0 DS-OFF, If it's Surround it will display 2/0/.0 DS-ON.

I tend to use DVD Decrypter, but I think I've read that it can sometimes be wrong. Can anyone confirm this, and profer a reason for the erroneous results?

I have never found DVD Decrypter to be wrong.  You just have to know how to interpret what it tells you!
