With hyphen, of course, as we have done for the past decade.

Ugly as the "english - geman" titles are, they are the official titles in Germany.
Not to mention that in this case this is how it is printed on the DVD itself.

cya, Mithi

Actually per rules the title comes from the front cover... and as can be seen in the first post the front cover does not use a hyphen in the title. So even if it is on the DVD itself... that don't dictate how it goes in profiler.

Now I am not saying whether it should be a colon or a hyphen. But I just wanted to point out you can't say it is coming from the dvd itself. At least not the place where the rules say the title must be taken from.

But I will say... I wish it was that simple... because if it was on the front cover that way... this whole thing probably wouldn't have came up at all.

I don't know if I can adequately describe this, but i will try. When I confront situations , which seem unclear, I will look at the Rule,, the Online, even other collections to determine the answer. I am not like i view many users here in the forums, I can almost see the glee and the hand-rubbing when someone finds something that they believe they can apply their own interpretation to. This to me indicates users who do not understand the Online, it function or even data, they merely have one single goal and that is putting their mark on the Online, deliberately throwing a handful of mud in the water instead of looking for the least problem caus9ing solution. In this case an entire country is off doing it's own thing and they don't care about the impact it has. I ALWAYS look for the least confrontational answer because all I really care about is one page for all, I have no room for users who want to do their own thing and no time either. So, what is lLEAST confrontational answer, evidently there are a lot of R1 users who understand this concept, because the subject never cam up here, we all just applied the colon. So an awful lot of users saw this is not an issue and another bunch of users saw it as an opportunity to go off on their own and adopt an answer that eventually was bound to create controversy. Guess what Germany...you got what you wanted and you evidently don't like it. Maybe you should stop worrying about doing things whatever way you wish or leaving your mark on the database and simply look around. You would be amazed at how easy this database is if you simply pay attention and stop worrying about doing what you want to do. That's all probably clear as mud, but perhaps a few will understand it.

According to this thread

subtitles or taglines were never considered (search for "dash")

It doesn't, but it also doesn't show a colon, so we have to look elsewhere for solutions.

Taglines absolutely not, NEVER. Karsten as to subtitles, the reason for that assuming that you know something about the industry history. Such things were relatively uncommon 5 years ago. As were Steelbooks, Digibooks and so forth. I do know beyond a doubt that had they been an issue, the answer would have been included in the Rule and the answer would have been colon. But we did not know what we did not know, and my crystal ball which allows me to foresee the future has been broken for decades. What kind of things does Hollywood have in store for us in 2010, I do have some clues, but by and large they just spring them on us.

BTW I am surprised the case people haven't gone all hysterical about Lunchbox cases.

Mithi:

No you don't have to look elsewhere. That is what causes exactly this kind of controversy. If you did the kind of things I have suggested you would have learned the answer without looking to your own creativity  so that you could leave your personal thumbprint on the Online. While these sub titles are relatively new, at least since the Rules were written, but in R1 as noted nobody ever even thought about it, they just seamlessly (and painlessly) went to a colon, while Germany decided to go off on its own....which ultimately leads to here. And one of your members even took the OP to task for bringing a "local" issue here, a might imperious of him I daresay. I could apply a few other adjectives to what i think of that users attitude, let's just say there was a historical precedent.

But that presumes that he can see what is on the cover, pete, since he apparently thought that a hyphen was on the cover.

I don't see how this is any different than subtitle situations ala X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes, Team America: World Police, 8MM: Eight Millimeter, Blood: The Last Vampire and so on. They tell you parts one and two of the title are alternate descriptions for the same thing. Therefore, they should be handled by the same rule.

I would further argue that this should be the same rule as episode descriptors because there is no bright line between them. For instance: Batman: Gotham Knight. Is it saying Batman is the Gotham Knight or is Gotham Knight one of many Batman titles? It's both, of course. So colons all around. Informal agreements don't hold a lot of weight with me, especially when they'd lead to ambiguous situations.

I don't speak German, so if colon and dash have different meanings there than in English, I have no problem with a different rule for German localities, but am firmly against a special rule for this particular situation since it would only serve to complicate the rules.

To expand a little further on my dissertation and something thatwould have no doubt helped for those blessed with that horror of horrors...common sense.

Their is also nothing in the Rules that spells out colon/hypen or anything else as it pertains to the edition, but how does the program represent the Edition field by using a COLON.

That alone I would have thought would have provided a hint as to the answer.

Common sense would also say that if this is the first time the issue has come up in a decade, it's been working pretty well for those that this issue affects.

Actually that one is a program option under -

Tools ---> Options ---> Display ---> Edition Format

You can choose between not showing the edition, with a colon, with a dash or between parentheses.

It's because they've kept it quiet and out of the official forums until now. If it had been addressed through official channels it probably would've been resolved long ago.

Resolved? Are you serious? Have you seen these threads? It looks like it was resolved until this thread was started and now look at what you have.

I certainly don't blame them for unofficially agreeing on it to avoid this nonsense.
