At the start of my thread here, I was thinking like Hal and since neither the cover nor the on-screen title has a colon, I thought it didn't need one. However, I saw the community was very divided on this matter so I started a thread with poll.

Now that some users brought to my attention the rule for episodic movies, I'm instead more inclined to add the colon, as Terminator Salvation clearly follows the timeline of the previous three movies. It's not the best solution esthetically speaking, but I think it's the solution closest to following the rules.

But again, I don't have any strong feelings either way, I would just like both parent and child profile to have an identical title (either with or without colon). Seeing how the poll went and how the rules are written, I've submitted a new title with colon for the parent profile.

Now that Gerri is on board, perhaps she can shed some more light for this particular case?

Point of clarification.  I've always said the colon was needed.

Hal is correct on his point. None of the films in your post are part of a series or consider various episodes of a movie. If you have others you have questions on, feel free to ask.

Once again, the covers of these titles show it on a single line with no font changes.

So the criteria is very straight forward:

1.  The film must be part of a series of films starting with the same title
2.  The Cover must display the main title on one line and the subtitle on a second line using a different size font

If you  have any other examples you'd like to question, please feel free to post them.

Beverly Hills Cop
Beverly Hills Cop II
Beverly Hills Cop III

or

Beverly Hills: Cop
Beverly Hills: Cop II
Beverly Hills: Cop III

In those logos, "Cop" is below "Beverly Hills" in a different font. The "II" and the "III" are next to "Cop" on the second line for the "episodes".

By your criteria, it A Knockaround Gals were to be released where the same stuff happens to some women, we would have to go back and add a colon to Knockaround Guys, which makes no sense. Also, Analyze This and Analyze that do have a second line with a different size font. See these further examples (on of which is part of my previous example series):

Do you really want "Bill & Ted's: Excellent Adventure" or "Harry Potter: And the Order of the Phoenix"?

Since the title of the first film is "Beverly Hills Cop", this is then the "main title", so all "episodes" would use "Beverly Hills Cop" as the main title.  Since these have numbers to describe the episodes, they are not "episode descriptors", but "episode numbers".

This is fun.  Keep them coming.

I won't address hypotheticals like "Knockaround Gals".

"Analyze This" is on two lines with the same size font, therefore, the main title, if there were an episodic series, would have to use "Analyze This" as the main title.  Since "Analyze That" does not contain the main title, the "episodic descriptor" rule dos not apply.  It would if the title were "Analyze This And That", were "And That" on a second line in a different size font.

"Ted & Bill's" is not the "main title" of the original movie.  It is simply a possessive included in the title.

Again Curious George is not the "main title of this movie.

Is there a series of movies called "The Violation" each with a different subjetc?  If not, the "episode descriptors" do not apply.

The Harry Potter example brings up a good point. We'd have to add that episode descriptors are not to used when the main title and the subtitle are joined by a conjunction.

Keep 'em coming.

Why isn't "Bill & Ted's" the name of the series? It's what each movie in the series start with. I also don't understand why you're discounting Curious George.

Looks like a size change to me.

Harold & Kumar are the same situation as Curious George: the series is named after a character or characters and each entry has the character name as the subject of a sentence. Ernest sometimes used this construct, but also used others, though they were all legitimate phrases.

And these series are hardly the only examples:

I dispute that Terminator Salvation is like Star Trek: Nemesis. I think it's more like The Matrix Revolutions.

Keep trying, Ace.

Here's another piece of argument I don't endorse or not. But'''Terminator salvation begs the question is the film trying to Save the Terminators, REALLY?, from what do they need saving. Tern=minator: Salvation not only makes clear it is another episode in the series but also seems to clarify the use of the term Salvation.<shrugs>

I'm now beginning to wonder if you are even paying attention.

I explained "Analyze This" / "Analyze That".

If the title of the first movie in the series was "Harold and Kumar", the next "Harold and Kumar: Go to White Castle", etc. then you'd have episodic descriptors.  But it's not.

The first movie in the Terminator series is "Terminator".  After that, an episode descriptor was added to the original title to distinguish them.

That's not what they did for Ted & Bill or Harold and Kumar.  Those are not main titles.

Same is true for "Ernest".

"Escape" is also not the main title of "Escape from New York" and it's all the same size font (except "from").

And "Matrix Revolutions" is all in the same size font, so no episode descriptor.

You're really, really stretching.  Can't you come up with anything better?
