I think I see what Snark is after and I can also see why it shouldn't be editable information.  Let's take BY information, as an example...

For actor Kenny Baker (1912), the following information would be included but not editable:
http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0048653/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenny_Baker_(entertainer)

Once documentation is established, and accepted, there should be no reason to change it.  I am not sure how this type of data would not match what someone wanted as it's sole purpose is to document the proper BY and make it easier to contribute.

This is typically the kind of unaesthetic technical data I feared, that I certainly don't want to appear on a layout that I use. Imagine that under the photo of Kidman in the example that I gave some posts above... Quite as horrible as spelling mistakes... If somebody wants that sort of useless data, good for them, but let to the others the possibility to send it to the recycle bin.

I wouldn't expect it to be displayed except when contributing/editing.  At that point aesthetics shoudln't enter into it.  Just accuracy. :-)

For general display purposes the info would be meaningless so it shouldn't be visible.

That I definitely agree with... I wouldn't want it visible all the time.

If it were fairly easy to implement, and only visible when requested, I would like to see this feature also.

I'm not sure I followed this logic.
Would I still be able to make local notes? Not to be propagated or contributed?

I think you always have the choice when contributing to select what you contribute. You should know this as you have made a contribution.   You allways have to mark [v] what you contribute.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

My guess, and it is just a guess as I did not make the suggestion, is that there would be additional space for personalized notes.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

But of course you should be able to change it Unicus... what if for whatever reason those links change or the site/page used is no longer there?... there has to be a way to change it whenever there needs to be a way to update it. Of course as for changing/deleting it locally only I don't personally see a reason to have/want too (and I wouldn't want to personally)... but at the same time I see no reason to take away the ability to do so if someone does have a reason... or just wants to change or remove it locally... not like it still wouldn't be online to get it again if need be.

my concern is what would happen if a fairly unknown actor had notes added that were libellous (or pornographic). And nobody voted against it?

Sounds like another reason to make it so it can be changed... if something does get through you have the ability to fix it... if you can't change then you are stuck with it. If you don't make it so you can change it then not only do you run the chance of things being updated online such as sites no longer there or addresses (and then you are stuck with useless notes)... something wrong that could possibly (even by accident) gets through and you can't change it you are then also stuck with useless notes.

I do whole-heartedly believe that anything added to the program needs to be easily changed because you never know when something will have to be changed on the fly to keep it accurate.

Notes per actor/actress: Initially, I would add DOD and I would want it fully editable (CRUD).

Snark's and Unicus extension to the "Notes" FR is a set of reference links that definitely should not be mixed with a notes field. They belong in its own area for each actor/actress.

I would want both information types to go next to the headshot in the Cast Information window/area and I would want to be able to "show/hide" both "Notes" and "Reference links" in the Cast Information window/area. I would want DVDP to remember my "show/hide" choice per actor/actress.

/ x

P.s.
Create, Read, Update and Delete (CRUD)

That's the way I understood dav4is idea too. And I quite liked it.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?
