I posted who the five new Cylons were. After they were revealed in season three, after season four started, after season three DVDs were available worldwide. And still I took amazing grief for answering a specific question.

I remember that instance... However, you had no choice at the time as no spoiler tag was available. You could not even ask yourself whether to use it or not.

This discussion is useless. Skip said he only wants to be convinced, which I see no purpose in, as it's Ken who decides if he want to follow up or not. And so far 71 people voted against 4, that might give Ken enough reason to do so once 3.5 is final (or at least the beta is released...).

As for disagreements what constitutes a spoiler: If I write something I myself do not consider a spoiler and someone points out that it might be one - well, then I simply add a spoiler tag even if I disagree. A spoiler tag is just a mechanism to force another conscious action by a reader before a certain part of the text is revealed.

That's what usually happens on most forums.  Someone will post something spoiler-y and another user will ask them to put spoiler tags around it to avoid spoiling others.  Remember, we are not talking about "The Empire Strikes Back" or "Citizen Kane" -- but films that are still in theaters or recently on DVD.  I personally would spoiler tags to most spoilers to avoid ruining a film for someone who might not have seen it.  It only takes an extra second to add the tags.

This isn't a forum issue, either.  I still remember Roger Ebert ruining the enjoyment of "Oldboy" for me in an article about Cannes, long before the film was even available on DVD in Korea, let alone the US.  The article wasn't even about the film, so there was no preparation for the ending to be revealed, especailly in such an offhand manner.  I haven't read a Roger Ebert article or review since and will never again.

Just a quick note that I "abused" the reputation system to rate that post of yours. I normally do this quietly as it is intended to be done, but since you have the gall to make such a rude post and then complain about the feedback you receive, I just wanted to remind you why your attempt at stylizing yourself as a victim will fool nobody here.

But I both voted "no" because I have no problem with spoilers without labels, and I like the idea of turning text into "invisotext" -- if I (or any other poster) wish to write something which requires the readers to choose if he or she wishes to read it. I have yet to determine precisely what colors would cause my text to become totally invisable.

'K?

I'm confused. You say you voted no, but you then to go on to say how you like the idea of turning text into "invisotext"? Isn't that what the spoiler tags could do for you?

Read the poll. The answer, for me, was no, because "... I enjoy movies more when someone tells me in advance 'the Butler did it'." How can there be confusion? I wouldn't mind a spoiler tag; would love a way to "inviso-text", but love spoilers even more.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

Actually, you took grief because you did not answer a specific question.  The thread in question was simply asking how to credit 'Grace Parks'.  You, and a couple of others, went off topic and listed all the Cylons by name and...in your case...pictures.

Others should have gotten grief as well but, I suspect, you took the brunt of it because you were so vocal in your opinion that you did nothing wrong.

And again, how could it have been any kind of spoiler, when the information and photos were from season three, season four was airing, and season three was out worldwide on DVD?

Is there no time limit to a spoiler? A year? A decade? A century? Can we never discuss Janet Leigh in the shower in "Psycho"? Rosebud in "...Kane"? The ice flow sequence in "Way Down East"?

When has enough time passed? Only after the DVD was released? It was!
Only after the DVD is discounted on Amazon? It was!

Your argument completely validates Skip's point.

Again while I understand the thoughts behind the request, it seems useless. As I noted some users might consider a spoiler to be anything after the Opening credits. Would a discussion of John Williams' musical description of the shark in Jaws be considered a spoiler, by some it certainly seems like it could be.

I really don't think that anyone would consider talking about the music in a film would be a spoiler.

There's a shark in Jaws?...  AAARGH!

It was a spoiler in the BSG thread because even though the DVDs were out there was no guarantee that everyone who wanted to watch them, had! Just because you had seen the episodes, and watched the DVDs when they first came out - you can't assume that everyone else would have as well. I personally was still catching up on series one when that post was made.
No, I don't think there should be a time limit to spoilers - especially if like Psycho and Citizen Kane you're talking about fundamental plot points. I went to college with a guy who had never seen Psycho and (somehow) was completely unaware of what the twist was, and this was 30 years after the film was released! There is no way I would ever dream of spoiling that for him.
Spoiler tags would allow us complete freedom to discuss all these things but still protect those who hadn't seen the film under discussion yet.

Edit: another prime example - I have never seen Way Down East so have no idea what the "ice flow sequence" is. Would you spoil that for me?

I agree with northbloke...
I personally never seen Citizen Kane (mush like most pre-'80s movies)... I want to eventually... but never have yet. So I would absolutely hate accidentally reading a spoiler for it.

You can use [ FONT COLOR="#cedef7"] or [ FONT COLOR="#eff7ff"] to hide any text in the forums, which needs to be highlighted with the left mouse button to become readable.

Examples:
Hidden text1 and Hidden text2

Or you could use this tool to replicate any color you see on screen.

ROFLMAO, and what do you believe was offensive, calling his comment BS or commenting on his intelligence. Surely you couldn't be referring to three asterisks. If that is the case then offense is in your mind, and THAT would be the abuse and reinforces was I said about 99.9% of the time, Mathias. Mathias I find MOST ofg your posts to be offensive based on your pompous attitude, yet i will not abuse the system just because you want to be jerk, you have a right to be so and to voice your opinion. That is enough in a thread designed to contain spoilers.  But, if I recall correctly, the last time this came up...and the reason it came up again this time...was that spoilers were included in threads that did not contain a *spoiler warning* in the thread title.

As to what constitutes a spoiler?  Any post that details specific plot points is a spoiler.  The most egregious spoiler is one that gives away plot twists...such as the identity of Luke's father or who is or is not a Cylon.

Hmm... yes. Me.

I think all we are asking is that the option should be there to mark something as a spoiler. For instance after you posted this information about the cylons, others could ask that you spolier it using tags and if you did this then the job is done.

Those who like the ending spoiled can still read what you have said - others can learn something fresh when they watch the epiosde. (btw I've just bought series 1-3 last week of BSG so will be able to watch series 3 now)

It's all about giving choice and some responsibility to the poster.

Again, having the ability to mark part of a post as a spoiler means you don't have to make this choice about when it stops being a spoiler. If something is that important then mark it with the new tags that are being requested.

Taking that responsibility then means you can freely discuss this whilst not spoiling this for others.

Its not as though using bold takes any time.. and the new spoiler tags would be the same.
