Without a banner they are a completely different shape so easy to distinguish at a glance even if very small thumbnails.

Graveworm,

Your only thinking DVD and HD DVD = completely different shape.

You need to remember:
HD DVD and Blu-ray = Exactly the same shape!  I have almost 100 of each and with studios like Warner Bros. that put out the same exact titles on both formats,  you NEED to SEE the difference in your collection.  And the collections are only going to get bigger.

Paul

Paul,

I agree there should be an indicator showing the difference but I oppose making the scans show that difference. An icon, as suggested by someone else, is a far better solution.

Graveworm,

Look at my on-line collection profile #'s 1797, 1798, 1799 and 1800.
HOW will I be able to tell the difference without a banner?

Paul

Found some more examples of why you need banners in a big collection so you don't double purchase:

I can see how you would have a difficulty telling between HD and Blu-ray if all you had were the front cover scans that is for sure; but no real headache.

An optional logo would be a good compromise and some way of telling on line and with the mobile version (which I have) would make matters easier. It is still easier to see at a glance if they are a completely different shaped scan. I don't have anywhere as many as you but have both formats. It doesn't cause me any problems and, as I said, not that it makes much difference but I prefer to be able to see at a glance which is the HD vs Standard def far more than tell the various high def formats apart.

If it helps you locally then the program lets you add them but the minority trying to impose their solution on on the majority who don't want it strikes me as a little egoistic

To avoid a double purchase I could always look at the profile.

It's myopic to claim that scans are the ONLY way of differentiating between formats. The program(s) and the online collection want updating in this case, whether or not banners are to be included in scans.

Exaclty! And from practical experience with only 200 HD discs and looking forward to the future with many more, it helps that the picture looks exactly like the cover that you have in your hand, and by "cover" I mean Front of Case.

Never said it was the "ONLY way".

People keep talking about handling this with a program update. That's great.... except we don't know if one is coming in the near future that will be helpful in this situation.

IF there was an icon, or something else that would let me see what titles are HD on DVDPM then perhaps I would be less insistent that the banner stays. But there isn't, so I am

We deal with the program as it is now, not as we hope it might be someday. Right now, you need something to show a difference between formats on DVDPM. There are two ways to do it. One is with the covers, the other would be to add HD DVD or Blu-ray back into the Description field ( ). Using the description field is something Ken said NOT to do. In fact, when asked specifically, he said we should remove it from the field.

Until Ken checks in with his thoughts on how we can handle this or let's us know if/when an update to the program will deal with this please let's keep the banners as is.

Don’t think you have a problem there, as long as Ken doesn’t say otherwise and/or a rule is made and/or a technical solution is provided.

You can’t!  And mobile is the most useful/convenient way to check and/or shop for discs when your away from your computer.

What I'll tell Ken via this thread here and now, is that the displayed banner/icon is the most practical and useful tool I've used, because it preserves the FULL cover picture completely and leaves the cover completely visible and accessible, just in case you want to copy it for the art, or hang it on the wall.

Edit:  And it's already transferrable to both the on-line and mobile displays.

From what I have seen the HD DVD logo is usually also visible on the back cover. But I do agree with the majority that a more prominent indicator would be nice for DVD Profiler Mobile and My Profiler. But I'm still convinced that case banners are not the solution.
