It doesn't really serve any point, unlike the other genres.

I feel this way about Classic AND Family.

Everyone has a different family, with different tastes; so I remove it from every profile.

I would be fine with the removal of Television as a genre if we were given a specific field for it.  Maybe a conversion of the ratings field, turning it into a Format field (for Film, Television, Live Performance, Short Films, Box Set, etc.).  This could even allow for icons or color-coding to denote what profile belongs to what category.

Could we please have this moved from the Announcement forum? It's getting pretty annoying to constantly see it lit up when there's no new announcements.

'A'  forum moderator moved this accidently, when it should have been left alone ..

Especially with TV I only know two kinds of contributions: It's either the first or the last, never in between.
Me, personally orders TV and Animation at the end, to have the "real" genre (like Sci-Fi) at the beginning, but I've never contributed a re-ordering of genres to the Online DB.

FWIW i'm 100% the same; putting TV last by preference but never contributing any re-order (as I know plenty like Addicted prefer it first) and just keeping my changes local and locked... usefully DVDP locks the order locally if I change them anyway.

I have about two dozen custom genres, so I tend to keep them local and then lock them - But I agree it would be nice to have some uniformity to the database.

Unfortunately, genres are very subjective and don't really mean a lot when you look at the big picture. The main reason for my heavy dose of custom 'overgenrefication' is so I can quickly find films I want to watch depending on my mood.

I would have thought the best idea was just to have the genres listed alphabetically, with a tick box to indicate the primary genre for the profile.

Paul:

That sounds like grounds for more fights.    How do you determine what the primary genre is. Is Desk Set a Comedy or a Romance. That like everything else as it relates to genre is purely subjective and can vary from user to user.

I agree with Skip there. Just like this thread shows that as long as Television is to be considered in with genres there is many of us that see it as Television being the primary genre (for profiler purposes) and many that believes a more standard genre should be primary.

As I said before... I will go with anything that Ken decides is right for the online database. But as long as it is left to us on how to list them there will never be any agreement on something as subjective as this.

Even if Television isn't strictly a 'genre' it's there in the genre list and is obviously intended to be used as such.  It's useful for sorts to find or exclude television programs, so I wouldn't advocate or support getting rid of it.

As to the order of genres, I fail to understand the purpose of making a submission that reorders genres or being concerned about the order of them at all.

FWIW apart from SF/Fantasy as a primary genre I ususally do list them alphabetically locally (though with TV last even if it's a Western)

I got an idea:

Ken, can a filter or slight change to the contribution, be put in so that as long as the 3 genre's listed are the same between the current profile and the update being contributed it treats it as no change. So if someone reorders genres to their preference and corrects the overview. when they go to contribute the changes it will only display the overview as a change and not the genre
