Let me be clear, I never said there was anything wrong with a standard.  In fact, I did say that I would use one if Ken decided to add one.  What I am against is people saying that 'we' need to fix this and 'we' need to set a standard.  The fact is, 'we' can do neither.  The only person that can is Ken...which is why I suggested you, the general you not the specific you, make the suggestion to change the rule in the forum Ken set aside for such requests.

Yes, you did say you would use one if there was one, BUT what I said was you didn't even want to discuss the possibility of change. Even in your reply, you avoided the discussion again. Do you think Ken wants to hear request changes without discussion? If you don't see a problem and other people do, what's wrong with trying to hear them out? Maybe you will see it as a problem also.

You know, if this had been a feature request, and I had suggested that it be reposted in the feature request forum, nobody would have batted an eye.  I wonder why it is so different when it is a rule request?

Please tell me you're joking. If you don't know the answer to this, then there probably is no reason to talk any further.

I didn't avoid the discussion.  I simply did not participate in this reiteration of it.  I have no doubt that Ken wants discussion, but I didn't try and stop this one, now did I?

I am not joking.  We have a rules forum for a reason...just like we have a feature request forum for a reason.  If you don't want to use it, that is fine, but don't jump on me when I suggest that you should.

(...)It's not my personal effort or Tim's that is at issue. It's the coordination of enough people that are willing to contribute the data to 878 distinct profiles.

Unfortunately, it is the system we have.  Would I, or you, or T!M, or Skip, or anybody else have done it differently?  Perhaps, but this is what we are stuck with.  Since it is, we have 4 choices (at least that I can see):

1. Do nothing.
2. Complain about it.
3. Work to fix it by fixing the profiles we can.
4. Suggest a rule or program change.

Number 3 is the only one we can do that will result in change.  We have enough people in these forums that we should be able to get enough profiles changed to give the correct result.  People just have to be willing to do it.

Huzzah, Unicus. Some of us excel at number 3.

You seemed to imply that there isn't much of a problem since it should be easy to fix. (That's how I interpret "it shouldn't be that difficult" and "or am I missing something here".)  While it's easy to fix a few of them by one's own effort, it's not easy to fix the entire problem for the reasons I outlined.

Yes we have enough people and if they were willing to do the work, it could be fixed. Yes, that's true. However, getting people to be willing...is tough. And it really depends on them. I can only take care of a certain number of profiles.

My mind isn't what it used to be, but I am quite sure I have seen threads dedicated to this very thing.  I have yet to see one that didn't accomplish the desired result.  While it took some work, it didn't seem like it was very difficult.  Unless, again, I am missing something.

Can you reference one? I'm not sure which threads you are referring to. Are you saying that we have actually worked together to correct all of the profiles for an actor to reflect the most credited name and the 'credited as' variants?

I see lots of threads where opinions are offered and disputes are made, but I'm not sure that we accomplish a corrected data set for any name.

I went back in the Contributions Forum to about a year ago (figuring that in a year's time we would have had enough time to correct things) and picked this thread What's the Common Name of Willie D. Burton?

At that time, the CLT results were (not sure what "sure" and "probably" mean here, but...):

Willie Burton
Sure 27 titles and 342 profiles
Probably 17 titles and 161 profiles

Willie D. Burton
Sure 21 titles and 324 profiles
Probably 8 titles and 11 profiles

And now the CLT results are:

Willie Burton 178 titles (482 profiles)

Willie D. Burton 264 titles (655 profiles)

That's just one isolated example. I understand that. But if you can show one where we've actually accomplished the goal of correcting the record, that would be cool to see.

How about we use tildas?  Like this: "Cuba Gooding~ Jr."

No one in their right mind would use it so surely we'd be safe then!

I did not follow these through to the end, but I believe Giga was trying to correct the profiles in these cases:

I don't there there is any reason we can't do this when needed.

Okay. The first 2 are from today, so I'll skip those since it's too early for results of the effort. Taking the 3rd and 4th examples:

3rd example: Noel Guglielmi or Gugliemi
CLT results of 9/24/08:
"Noel G." is credited in the following 1 titles (7 profiles)
"Noel Gugliemi " is credited in the following 125 titles (326 profiles)
"Noel Guglielmi " is credited in the following 125 titles (247 profiles)'

CLT results as of 10/19/08:
"Noel G." is credited in the following 1 titles (8 profiles)
"Noel Gugliemi" is credited in the following 127 titles (326 profiles)
"Noel Guglielmi" is credited in the following 127 titles (255 profiles)

4th example: Baadja-Lyne Odums
CLT results as of 9/23/08:
Baadja-Lyne" is credited in the following 15 titles (18 profiles)
Baadja-Lyne Odums" is credited in the following 23 titles (53 profiles)

CLT results as of 10/19/08:
"Baadja-Lyne" is credited in the following 17 titles (22 profiles)
"Baadja-Lyne Odums" is credited in the following 22 titles (52 profiles)

Going back to where we originally started this sub-topic, Tim mentioned that we would be propagating IMDb data for years to come. You suggested it wouldn't be that difficult to fix. When I started linking the names in my database using the Name Variants plugin, I think I had over 4,000 name variants.

As you say, there's no reason we can't do this when needed, but my point is that it's difficult to motivate the number of people required to get these taken care of. In the above examples, Giga was motivated and he got some input from others, but a month later, not much has changed.

Multiply that by the thousands we need to deal with and I think one can appreciate the enormity of the project as well as understanding the basis for Tim's comment that we're looking at years here. (The cynical answer is "never", but I'll hold out hope for Tim's answer.)

This will always be a problem as long as it is dependent on users, instead of data, and users who instead of understanding the concept of suit happy companies and belittle users who DO actually understand the concept and try to avoid it.
