except the 2nd copy has it's own set of circumstances behind it.

All of my dups have their own collection number. They all have their own price paid. Some dups are there because of a box set purchase so the one disk has to be associated with the box set while the other does not. My guess is most people are in the same boat. I doubt there are many of us who buy 2 discs at the same time for the same price from the same place just to have a duplicate.

Just putting a quantity field in the personalize section would mean you lose a lot of information for one of the discs. Not the right solution if you ask me.

You can put as much into the NOTES field as you want if you feel you need more than just  a single field.  But if ALL the data (other than personalized data like price paid) is the same for both discs, I think it's still a unique title.

Of course the movie data will be the same for both discs. For me anyway (as I can't speak for anyone else) it is the personal data that I am trying to preserve, that and the association with any box set as I mentioned previously. Using the notes field is nothing even close to a solution.

I love it when people try to discuss features they would like to see added and the answer is always the same "NO, we have a tag system USE IT" or "Use the Notes field". Tags and notes are great, I use them both and know quite well they can be a great workaround for a lot of the program's limitations. In most cases they are just that though, workarounds.

I've tagged this post under "Rant" and added a note that it might be time for Rick to take another break.  Or get the next beta when it's available.

You'll have to excuse me.  I've been at work for 13 hours now and expect this to be a 18-19 hour day.  Then I have to be back tomorrow at 10 to finish upgrading to our new servers.  Then I have to work tomorrow night on another project. So I'm a little bored at this point.

Can anybody explain to me why Invelos would want to prevent commercial use? It's not like they would offer a higher priced alternative for that market. IMO this commercial use argument has always been a red herring.

So, paying a commercial license fee could lift the restriction on the number of copies -- i.e. limited to 2 (or 3) for $30, unlimited for $?? (commercial).

you could ask for a aditional copy field: where you could keep track of how many copies of one profile you have in your collection, this could be a local field or online filed if Ken wishes to track if you are a commercial user of his program and add some more revenue

You can add as many profiles manualy with the same title as you want to the local database.
you then could add those as children with the same specifications to the main profile in your local database, probalby solving many issues.
Just remember never to cotribute the DVD Box items from the main profile to the online and lock it to deny updating from the online.
The movie/series information would only be in the main profile. And if you want to you could copy and paste the covers immediatly in dvd profiler
  • main profile (right click on the cover and copy)
  • Child profile (right click on blanc cover and paste)
  • If you take it further then that you could use bulk edit plugin.

so this way you could keep track of all your copies.
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

I agree with Rick. I have duplicate UPCs where one disc is part of a box set and one is a single. I have duplicate UPCs with different cover art, different aspect ratios, etc. Also, I number my collection based on date acquired. Therefore, duplicate UPCs have different collection numbers, often far apart. I use manual profiles to track duplicates. I wish we could have duplicates in the main database so that we could trade alternate covers and other profile information that might differ between different releases with the same UPC.

When you have duplicate UPC, you could use above with manual titles and change the covers where needed and have them as children of the original profile. When the contents of dvd's with the same UPC differs froim each other the should add by disc-id they would not have the same extended disc-id.

This is a whole other concept then what we have now. Online First release only. I could understand the need for local same UPC/EAN. Online: I don't know if this would still be managable for Ken, how many more profiles would there be with covers to put in the online database. Exponentional I think?

as for now there are only
7527 DVD Profiles in the Belgium locality population (10,584,534) estimated 2007
21477 DVD Profiles in the Netherlands locality population (16,408,557) estimated 2008
33082 DVD Profiles in the United Kingdom locality population (60,975,000) estimated 2007
61869 DVD Profiles in the Untied States locality population (305,114,000) estimated 2008

still some profiles available in those localities are not in the online, yet

so with that option to put every UPC with the smallest difference for every user online what would be the impact of that. My SRP differs of yours I want it online, my cover has lighter colors then yours, mine is second edition yours third, ....

Nobody's asking for that. But they are asking for the ability to have more than one copy of each profile and the ability to be able to profile "official" re-releases.

I'only have "official" re-releases in my collection that are online

was also referring to the online!

No point to take.  I was joking that I "tagged" and "noted" your post.  I didn't mean to imply anything else. You just seemed annoyed, so I went with it.

A different cover is a significant difference to me. If I don't have the original cover, I have to scan it myself, as do others. It would be nice if we could trade them.

Also, when only original release details are included (and I'm not talking about changes in SRP), we're not able to alert users to situations where re-releases drop either the pan and scan or widescreen side of an original release. Sony/Columbia is famous for this practice. If DVDP could track the variants, it would be easy for a user to see the variants. This provides a heads up for when one is shopping for these. The currently available disc, if it is now only pan and scan, is noteworthy.
