The "cloning" tips is useful for a few things, as cast & crew but there's still some work to do.
I know this is dvdprofiler ... but is also blu-rayprofiler and hd-dvdprofiler .. so, since laserdisc is still a "digital media" (rememeber: up to 1080i60 video with the latest muse discs ... years before blu-ray and hd-dvd) and many many titles are never been released yet to dvd, a plugin for laserdiscs, imho, is still in the actual dvdprofiler philosophy.

Laserdisc has never been a digital media, it is an anlog form, which is why the platters are 12" and the pits are many times the size of the pits on DVD or BD. I am sorry to tell you Laserdisc is dead, for nearly 10 years now. I have quite a few left myself, but it is time to recognzie that there is not going to be any program written to accomodate a dead format. However, we choose to domit is going to have to be within any existing system, and the best answer has been given. In a way I am glad, I don't have any idea how I would scan Covers.

I know laserdisc is dead, hd-dvd is dead, too, and is in the dvdprofiler options. Remember, there are over 50.000 titles on laserdisc with many, many titles that will likely never be available on other format.
Laserdisc has analogue video and digital sound (PCM/AC3/DTS) but all of the reading on the media, audio and video, remains in the digital domain. Latest MUSE discs have digital video, too, encoded at 1080i60, along with multichannel audio.
For the covers, use a digital camera or steal them from www.lddb.com    (only front covers).

I think there is a difference with HD-DVD as it was not a dead format when it was put into DVD Profiler. I personally wouldn't want to see this as I don't personally see the sense of adding a format that is already dead.

But if it does happen at all... I would be willing to bet it would be in a way that it would be local onliy... not contributable.

That's why i was suggestin' an optional plugin, not necessarily a free one, that users can choose to install/buy or not to modify the dvdprofiler layout.
Of course the contribution issue remains, but since many if not all of the Laserdiscs published have a unique ISBN code, i don't see why not.

Laserdiscs are still around (mirror layers crumbling away), but players are impossible to get. And the old ones expire... using gas lasers and a lot of mechanics does not make a reliable product for the long term.

Of course these XXL DVD's are closer to DVD's than CD's and such, but I can understand why so many conisder this a has-been format that does not merit a lot of attention in further development of DVDP.

Anyone feeling like creating a plugin for laserdiscs (disabling any contribution of course)?

one of the people who have made some plugins already, or Ken, would probably be able to comment on this more accurately but I don't believe that this is really a plugin type add on as your basically just talking changes/additions to the base program; possible new fields, new options in the predefined fields, and possibly a way to handle the images. (I could be wrong and it could be possible to handle this with a plugin)

on a side note, in addition to what Addicted said about HD-DVD not having already been dead when it was put in, on a purely program level (data stored about the disc) its basically the same as blu-ray, which is basically the same as DVD. So with adding Blu-Ray, which makes sense, why not add HD-DVD? (thinking about it the info for laserdiscs probably aren't really all that different and the using tags to mark them (could also use HD-DVD as the type provided you don't have any since thats now dead) works just fine)

I think the best option (if anything is done) is to add a Custom option for the format where you can type whatever you want, then just adapt the fields to that format. Anything custom would not be contributable of course but this would also handle all the video game profiler and cd profiler requests.

Many DVDs use a unique ISBN number as well, and many older laserdiscs use NO UPC?EAN of ANY KIND. You get the distributors catalog # and titler and that is ALL.

Would it not be enough simply to have a different media option? What other information in the profile would need to change?

I can understand that is not possible to make major changes to dvdprofiler to accept laserdiscs. I think a different media option will do. Tags alone will not do, imho, because if i want to select ex. all dvd's i'll have all the laserdiscs in the list too (assuming i have registered laserdiscs as dvd ... same thing for BD or hddvd).
For the covers: digital camera and go .. or if you're too lazy take them from the laserdisc database on the web here

Coming a bit late to this conversation - many thanks for the link to lddb! I've been looking for a way to catalogue my laserdiscs and don't particularly mind it being a separate site, and that seems to work pretty well so far. Particularly like that it supports pre-bar-code catalogue numbers so I don't have to type in the whole title for the older disks.

Eventually I'll probably put together some sort of combined list but that can be an excel document or something, really don't need it to be a single database for everything.
