I will definitely agree that the online version needs work, and I'll take that over this any day of the week, but if Ken's going to fix this now, I'll get behind it.

But the problem is that there are nothing to fix. We can already make this with what we have, at worst just add a checking option for the parental control.

Title: Edition Rating
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2  R
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 : The Gruesome Edition  NR

Just add the checking option and the NR will be filter as a R rated (or NC-17) version for the parental control purpose. Look simple to me, no need to invent a square wheel.

One thing comes to my mind,

can anyone explain to me where the REAL difference between Not Rated and UNRATED in America is ?

From my understanding:
Doomsday gets an UNRATED DVD release after its R-rated theatrical run. This means the new Unrated version was never seen/checked by the MPAA, am I right here ?

Death Race 2 is a direct to Video release marked as NOT RATED, this release has also never seen the lights of the MPAA, am I right here too ?

If those 2 above statements are correct, that both versions of those films were not seen/checked/rated by the MPAA, why should we seperate them in DVD Profiler ?

cheers
Donnie

For all intents and purposes, it is a distinction without any difference.

So you are suggesting that the Edition data actually oVerrides the rating data from the back cover. When there is REAL ratings data, that seem fictional to me.

I am not sure why you are confused.  Until Ken changed the rule, that is how we always did it.  The only difference now is that, instead of lumping them all into 'NR', we place some in 'NR'...those that were never rated...and some in 'Unrated'...those that, during their theatrical run, had a rating.

One has to wonder why it wasn't fictional under the old rule.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

because  no one ever brought up and this user did not do that, i follow the data and ratings data has a place and it's NOT the edition field, Unrated mat well appear in the Edition field, but that does NOT make it the Rating. As noted for Pitch Black; Unrated does appear in the Edition field, but the ACTUAL tratings from the back cover is different and does NOT say Unrated..

So, I don't know who you are talking about considering the Edition field as the rating but it has never been true here, and I would in no way even try to present an argument that it was, it is only relevant to the Edition field. Is there something i need to watch Contributions even closer on?

The only thing I can think of that you are referring to is that NR=Unrated, to pretend otherwise is simply a distinction without any real difference. And as noted arbitrarily separating the two is probably going to cause just as many, if not more, problems than NR=Unrated. I am becoming increasingly convinced that a short term fix as discussed is NOT the answer

Let me clear up a few points.

1) I am not spending my days focused on this issue.  I'm steadily working on the important work items, so no need to worry that this is taking up my time.

2) Anything that requires a program change will have to wait.  This is far from an emergency item and so will have to wait for a regular release.

3) At this point, I believe adding Unrated is the best possible solution to the problem short of a program change.

The only outstanding issue in my mind is whether to apply the Unrated rating only in cases where "Unrated" or similar is prevalent on the cover, or to also apply it to "NR" films which previously were given a theatrical rating.

Please focus further discussion in this thread on this issue only.

Closing this thread. I'll replace with a poll topic on the outstanding issue.
