Feel free to buy you own copy here if you wish to test it. Quote: Always? You'll notice that I said "It seems". That means that it happened for every region free title that I checked after I started using Passkey. I see that even though this topic is about region free BDs, none of the examples you provided are region free. So why don't you come up with some relevant info for a change? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

Quote: I see that even though this topic is about region free BDs The topic is DVDFab Passkey. Quote: none of the examples you provided are region free. And I even explained why. I've reached The Milestone a long time ago, what do you expect? Pictures of one thousand correct region free Blu-rays? Versus your one example that Passkey "always" misidentifies Blu-rays? Quote: So why don't you come up with some relevant info for a change? I'm just a troll. Quote: Why replace AnyDVD? Just curious. I think this was a technical question, not a political one. I would also be interested in understanding a bit more about it. The part I understand least is why it needs constant updates and stay connected to a server. Is somebody collecting my activities? Constant updates = because release companies are always trying to stop the current version of AnyDVD from working with their latest discs. The goal is to get as much of the 30 day window available as they can for people to buy the disc instead of copying one. Stay connected to a server = It does not actually "stay" connected. It only contacts the server, *sometimes*, because: With DVD, the CSS encryption is actually broken on the client computer. With AACS encryption on Blu-Ray, the code that actually does the decryption is *not* run on the client computer. Instead, a database of **every single Blu-Ray release, ever** is stored in the AnyDVD executable. If the disc you insert is **not** in the local database, then it sends data to the server. If the server has it, it pulls the decryption info down. If it does not, then the **server** runs the code to break the decryption and adds it to the database. (The user has to wait some time, typically some minutes, to try their disc again after the server generates the decryption key and adds it to its database.) Later releases of AnyDVD update the client database, which is another reason for frequent updates. Another reason to contact the server is for BD+, which is another layer for protection some discs use on top of AACS. A local database for this would be several gigs, so it contacts the server for that as well. **Some** discs have BD+ broken on the client. **Most** newer discs do not; this is to make it less easy for studio disc publishers to see how BD+ is being broken and update their BD+ protections to make it harder for AnyDVD to break. It's a constant game of chess. Passkey is exactly the same, as far as I'm aware. No discs are actually decrypted locally. It also uses a local database / server lookup method. I believe it **only** uses server lookup for BD+. As for region patching, **that** is done locally. I have found that AnyDVD does this more reliably than Passkey. That's just my personal experience. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

This is what Passkey reports for the UK release of Hired to Kill. According to the back cover it is region free. Are you saying that this UK release is actually region A only, as Passkey reports? It is **possible** for Blu-Rays to have **different** playback configurations for different regions, such as different previews that play in Region A. Passkey *may* just be seeing something like this and locking it to region A. Remember, with Blu-Ray, the **discs** aren't tagged with regions, the **player** is. The discs can then do what they want with that info, including playing different material for different region tagged players. So to patch a region A locked Blu-Ray disc for example, the disc is "tricked" into thinking that it's *always* in a region A player, even if it isn't. That will make the disc play on *any* player. But if a disc has *different* content for *different* regions, then the copied disc will *always* and *only* be able to play the region A content. That's why it's important to *always* set the correct region in Passkey / AnyDVD, if it can't determine the region and it asks you what region the *disc* is. (If you select region A on a region B locked disc, then copy the disc, the copy will *always* "think" it's in a region A player and the copy will *always* say it's in the wrong region, even if it is in a region B player, ergo the copy will *never* work!) In the case of your disc, can you try manually force selecting region B or C in Passkey (I know you can do this in AnyDVD; not sure about Passkey these days), then playing the disc on your computer player to see what happens? It's not unusual for packaging to mismatch the disc, such as saying region A when it will play in all three regions. It's also not unusual for AnyDVD to report that it can't determine the region and asks the user to select one. This is why the *only* real way to *accurately* test Blu-Ray regions is play the disc three times, each time force selecting the three regions in either your computer player + AnyDVD or Passkey, or a region selectable hardware player, to see what happens each time. | | | 99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1." |

| Posted: | | | | @Grendell Since Passkey successfully identifies the main feature track (it displays the file name), I would have to assume that it uses that to identify regions, not previews and such.
As for incorrect info on the packaging, yes I have seen A or B on what is actually a region free disc. But I have never seen ABC for a disc that isn't region free. And this disc played fine on my Oppo set to region B. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |
