I would support having the search engine work this way.

For example finnish words hamara = blunt side of the axe (there must be a real english word for this I think).

How about hamara = hammer?

It's simply to include any and all variants.

Simple, yes, usefull, no. What I'm trying to say that these aren't any "variants", they are completely different letters which have their capitalized counterparts that are ALWAYS used, even when all are written in caps. a=A, ä=Ä, ö=Ö, å=Å. So the don't ever produce problems like FRANCOIS=François or PENELOPE=Penélope

If you see letter "T" or "Y"do you think that they are accented variations of letter "I" and therefore should be included, I don't think so.

I'm all in including the accented variations, but separate letters must be excluded.

Quote:

The same way as the "Search within Title" box for titles. Checked it includes, unchecked it doesn't.

So, if checked
Penélope / Penelope
and
Härmä / Harma
are different names

and if not checked, Härmä / Harma are the same name and therefore linked, no thank you.

Just leave (at least) letters aA, åÅ, äÄ, öÖ out and I love the idea

Skip: there's a reason this is on the feature request board. If the search could handle them properly (there woudl have to be a couple other tweaks, too) then the program wouldn't consider  "François Truffaut" and "Francois Truffaut" different names and would auto -ink them and we could enter them whatever way we determine to be correct via outside sources, just like capitals. I know you didn't liek this solution with capitals, and you'll probably like it less here as you hate accommodating French users, but it makes sense and would basically solve a long-standing problem.

Ace:

Yes there is a reason it is Feature Request booard, that however does not guarantee that the request is valid.

I I find your post argumentative and insulting. I don't hate the french, it just is coincidental that a french speaker is one of the most vocal on this issue. What are you talking about, we don't use outside sources, our data comes from the film credits PERIOD. keep your outside sources to yourself, unless you are referring to the CLT and documentation, in which case there most certainly is a difference between Jose and José. If there were no difference then you would not have people going on and on about their linguistic preference when it differs from the credits.

I don't see this as solving anything vis a vis linking, searching or anything else. Simple association will fix all of it in one fell swoop and will not add a layer of confusion, which this would do . Look at it people, you are already Ok here, but not there and this is why and so forth. that makes it horrible solution by simple definition. There is an answer but ken has to implement it, it's a programming solution and the one proposed by Ace ain't it, just creates even more problems.

I was thinking last night about what Ken could be up to and even if he makes the Online more searchable the Priority name system won't help, you will have to know what the priority name is to search properly. The simple association system does not require any special knowledge. It only requires that an association between two or more variants be established,. Once they are established then which ever variant a user searches on...the resulting list will ALWAYS be the same. I would setup such a system so that the results could be prioritized by the user, for example with the searched name appearing first in the list with subsequent variants appearing based upon frequency.

It's rather amusing that i NEVER see this same argument applied to either a role of let's say Francois Cousteau or to an unknown  or relativeluy unknown actor, the argument for this stuff ALWAYS is applied to A-List personnel, and it comes unglued everytime when you move lower down the list of celebrity.

A-list actor or unknown actor is not a problem for a French name : Francois doesn't exist at all.

And I fully support Ace's proposal. Though it doesn't solve all the problems, at least it would help to maintain a local database linking properly.

While my French is very rusty, Yves. It was one of your own countrymen who earlier this year pointed out there is indeed a Francois and it is pronounced Frankoa.

I think that "one of my own countrymen" was myself, when I said that Francois would be pronounced Frankoa, which sounds in French so ridiculously that nobody would want to be called like that. There is no Francois at all in France.

If another French user spoke of Francois, please quote...

When you express your disagreement with a French person by outting down the French general and continue to do thsi after being told it's offensive, forgive me if I draw the wrong conclusion. My apologies to the speakers of Scandinavian langues. I do not speak any of them and am only familiar with English, Spanish and a bit of French and Italian. I made some incorrect assumptions about some of your vowels. After posting I remember that ñ is typically capitalized as N, no it would need to be dealt with at all.

You presume far too much, ace. I see no one else save fro one lone Frenchman, from anywhere jumping up and down and screaming at the top of his lungs every chance he gets that his particular linguistic preference be dealt with. One Frenchman. i have acknowledghed the issue and i have sauggested an answer within the both the Rules and the program as it exists now. Your request is not an answer, it will only make things much worse as I have explained.

But you really do need to stop ASSuming that you know that which you cannot know, and your insulting remarks are quickly becoming stale. But I won't stoop to the childish behavior of ignoring you or even trying to because while i may disagree, even passionately, I believe that all need to be heard.

Is it really necessary to describe every response that you don't agree with as "insulting"?

It really has become tiresome.

I know exactly what you're talking about.

It was simply an observation.  Describing every response as "insulting" only turns people off to whatever else of value you may have to say.

Just trying to give you some advice.

You know what they say about advice?

I understand that, Hal. But in my view Ace fired a rather insulting remark my way, And as I have said, many times, I will call people on it when they fire first. It was not a remark that he needed t make, nor was it appreciated. You know it make actually be helpful, Hal, if instead of taking me on for defending myself, take on the offender for a change.

You mention tiresome. It gets tiresome from my side, to see users such as yourself pounce on me for defending myself while let the various cretins skate on their merry way, and continue making the Forums a miserable experience for ALL of us. I will continue to defend myself as i feel i need to.
