It's all the same to me, but cleaning out illegal profiles from the online is really Ken's thing.  I mean, if we find one of these bad ones are stepping on a legitimate one, we simply post the updates to correct it.  If Ken wants to maintain the junk on his servers, that's his deal.

this makes the most sense. having a button or such to report bad profiles may help, but i think would be abused, unless it was clearly only used to remove bad or illegal profiles not ones that someone thinks could be better.(personal preference)

I support this, but I would like to add that it should possibly be available without having to add the dvd to your collection first, ie you can do it from the add screen. I say possibly because if there are too many invalid submissions requiring you to download it first is a bit more time consuming so can act as a deterent for people that think its fun to just click the remove button.

While perusing the up coming releases I see a lot of titles that are UK releases...normally this wouldn't be a problem but my locality is set to US and I only show the US titles. In fact I saw so many titles I almost reported it as a but that the filter wasn't working on the upcoming release pages. I corrected on (downloaded it and corrected the locality and resubmitted it then I redownloaded the incorrect one and submitted it with the title 'please delete incorrect locality' and put in my contribution notes that I added the correct version for anyone that had the incorrect one downloaded it.

As you can see from describing it, it's a relativlely lot of work to clean up the database (and i felt that if i was gonna remove it i should first submit the correct locality because its the right thing to do). So after noticing at least 5 more of these i decided i barely have the time to make corrections and do new scans for the titles i own so i wasn't gonna spend my time with this. so maybe an expansion to this would be a way to request a profile is moved to a new locality

I wrote this a few posts up:

When localities were introduced to the program, a lot of entries were incorrectly changed to locality UK. Up till now, a lot of these incorrect entries remain in the database.

You noticed at least 5? I think I can come up with 1,000. Easy.

This was just on one week of upcoming releases. Since these are all pre-release profiles (march of this year) I doubt the introduction of localities has anything to do with it.

Many users still don't understand the difference between locailty and CoO and the concept is hardly explained in the program so it's no surprise.

There need to be a lot of preventatives and reviews to anything like this; there are just too many people who have insistently vandalized the database for god knows what perverse reason.  It's a world full of sociopaths who delight in wrecking the hard work of others.

Perhaps the "simplest" way to stop vandals would be to allow open voting on them. Add a new tab to the Contributions system for submitted for deletion entries. To keep things tidy they wouldn't appear in the Unvoted Pending Updates but ONLY under this tab. Anyone who wants to vote for these can do so, not juts those who have it in their database. We've got enough sensible people here who would vote the correct way and not try to remove valid profiles. Because they're on their own tab, those who have no interest in the removal of invalid profiles wont have to see them.

Note: I don't claim it's the best way but it seems the simplest.

I second that, Forget. That would be a good way to stop vandals in their tracks on the one hand and get the clean-up done on the other.

How many of these bad profiles are actually included in somebodies collection?

I think maybe the first thing that needs to happen is a DB scrub.  Any profiles that have 0 users get flagged. and maybe a special section to list these titles for say 1 month.  Users would be able to go to this section, and vote to keep profiles (not delete), then depending on the results, delete what is necessary.  At least it would be a start(although I do not know how many profiles this would be)

I seem to remember Ken saying a while ago that Invelos doesn't keep track of how many people have a certain title in their collection so unfortunately that wouldn't be possible.

Besides, I don't think the number of users owning a profile says anything about its validity. Some rare releases, especially in small localities, could well be owned by just one active DVDP user. In my contributions, I tend to focus on this type of profile in order to expand the Invelos database, and on some of them I get no votes at all.

He does have a DB for everyone that keeps there collection online, otherwise the contribution system would not work.  It is all data, and can be used.

I also didn't say it was a perfect Idea, and not even sure how many profiles it would affect.

That is why I also suggested posting for a month, just to weed out the ones that are valid.

Yep, this is a big problem in the UK locality. In the fall of 2007, a joint effort was started to remove them, but I think it got stranded somewhere halfway through.
