Wow. I wasn't expecting to start up a debate! I was just hoping for an answer thinking that the regulars all understood some reasoning that I had not yet heard outside of the rules.

Obviously I am not alone in this debatable issue

The answer to your question is, that "the title on the DVD case is the title you see when it is on the shelf.  Since this is DVD Profiler, not Movie Profiler, that is the title that should be in the DB."

This is a feature that many people asked for.  I hope that answered you question.  I didn't read all the posts so, if someone else already answered it, I apolagize for the reduncancy.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

You can ask the time in this forum and start an argument!

My question for you is that you were obviously aware of the rule and the fact that it does not include any kind of provision to use OTHER than the Front Cover. So Why did you? The answer is probably along the lines of your definition of accuracy and because you wanted to do it.

There were many factors:

  • Yes, my definition of accuracy
  • My lack of full understanding of the rule since, again, it says "Use the title from the front cover." and not "type the title exactly as you see it" which, to me would be more of a concern for a situation such as if someone did not know whether to use "M:I:III" or "Mission: Impossible III", not just a basic piece of punctuation.
  • The fact that, when I first searched for the title to add it to my collection, there was another copy in the database (which uses a similar cover with no comma) where the comma is included in the title.

  • I do actually think about these things before I act.

From that perspective, it makes perfect sense.

As I said from the start, I wasn't debating the issue. I only wanted to understand how the reasoning came about given it is a little unusual, IMO. I only wanted to know "Why".

    Thanks Unicus69

I think the logic of the rule is this:

Some people woud prefer that the title include the comma -- because that's the more common spelling.  Others would prefer to exclude the comma because it's not on the cover.  But since the rule says to use the title from the cover, that means use the one without the comma.  If you follow the rule there's no problem and no reason for someone else to come along and try to change it -- only to have someone else try to change it back again.  The rule is written the way it is, IMO, to prevent pingponging of contributions.

It may not make suit you (and actually doesn't suit me, either -- If I had the DVD in my collection I'd go with the comma, lock the title field, and ignore updates) but it makes pingpong prevention a little easier.

One other reason why this came about was to facilitate users who do adds by title.  This can particularly come up on preorder wishlists.  If you're putting in the title of the DVD you'd expect no match to mean that the DVD wasn't present in the online.

In the case of a comma, you'll probably still get what you want but there are other titles that can be more extreme.
