Yes, but they were dirt-cheap only because Radio Shack planned to use them as a markting tool.
CueCat History Lesson: Originally, the CueCats were free. Can't get much cheaper than that. And although Radio Shack was at the forefront it wasn't the only marketer who was going to use them. Many large-scale marketers were signed on to use the CueCat (and related software). The idea was that they would put a bar code in their printed advertising (newspaper and magazines) and if you were interested in their product all you'd have to do was scan the code with your CueCat and you'd be taken to the marketer's web site. The problem was that the software EULA had a lot of objectionable fine print in it. And you'd have made public all your interests and opened yourself up to a whole lot of potential risk -- and a lot of unwanted email. The original CueCats were encoded so anything entered using them could be identified back to the user. Soon someone figured out how to disable this hard coding (thus was born the de-Clawed CueCat). The CueCat's original concept went down to a dismal failure soon after it launched. But there must have been a whole lot of them made, because it doesn't seem too hard to acquire a de-clawed CueCat today -- maybe not from Radio Shack but from any of several eBay sources. I paid around $10USD for one a couple of years ago, and it works fine for entering data into Profiler. I've only run across a couple of USBs that wouldn't scan. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole)

Now I am going to EBay to get one. When you get your reader, you might also want to take a look at "Plugins" - add-on programs to DVD Profiler. For example, there is one called "UPC Import" that will allow you to scan your collection into a simple list and then import them in batches. Or you can use a simple spreadsheet to collect the data, then create a CSV file of UPCs, and import the whole batch with BulkEdit. The only problems I have with the CueCat are on barcodes that contain an extra two digits after the UPC. If I see those, it's quicker to simply type in that UPC than to use the CueCat.
Most UPCs scan just fine for me but sometimes I have to swipe it over the barcode back-n-forth several times for it to pick up. Overall, you can't go wrong with it for general use.
It even has a sleep mode! |

What you could do is open Notepad -- scan the UPC into Notepad -- cut and paste the value without the extra digits into Profiler.
