Re 'Stand-Up Comedy', I think James' more general 'Performance' genre might be the way to go (perhaps 'Live Performance'?). For stand-up comedy, you could then choose this in combination with comedy. For music concerts, you could choose it in conjunction with 'Music', etc.

I can see this working as well.

Me too;

Live Performance, Music for (Pop) Concerts
Live Performance, Comedy for Stand-up/Stage Comedies

are better than performance alone, because it could easily be confused with normal (movie/television) performances without an audience (especially in other languages).

I think I am reading SG's suggestion differently to you Martin?

stand-up comedy would be...
Genre 1 slot - you would choose Live performance
Genre 2 slot - you would choose comedy

opera etc would be...
Genre 1 slot - you would choose Live performance
Genre 2 slot - you would choose music

Unless I have got it all totally wrong in which case I'll go get my coat...

I had thought of something similar, not sure if both could be covered.

True-stories or Based on true events, ie Schindlers List, Erin Brokovich etc
You know the kind of films I mean, I have got lots in my collection

But perhaps this is going down the 'keywords' avenue we need to avoid?

Personally, I pick the one genre that most describes a particular disc and then lock it down.  Such as War, Action, Horror, etc.  Makes it a lot easier to maintain where something sits on the shelf.

I would like to see some additional categories such as Film Noir, etc., but I think 3 slots is plenty.

Whoever had the idea of making genres global online, and user ordered locally I completely agree with.  That would virtually eliminate ping-ponging to reorder genres.

I wonder about the ping ponging and disputes that might arise over that? Take something like PEARL HARBOR as an example. Would this count as based on true events? You could argue either way as it contains some real events, but historical distortions as well as fiction.

indeed. mystery, crime, film noir...something that says more than suspense/thriller.

that alone would make me happy...

and what John said about the global/local thing. updates that only flip the genres drive me to crazy...

[he means crazier...do you?]

Performance is another great idea.
"I am Andrew Ryan and I am here to ask you a question:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his own brow?

No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.

I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
Rapture."

I'd like to differ erotic movies from XXX movies (as a genre!) in some way.
