While we have the front cover and back cover art for all of our DVDs, where is the binding art?  If we stored this as well, we would be able to create a bookshelf view of our collections!

Studios spend a great deal of money designing the spine of each DVD becasue, for most people, that is the part we see every single day on those shelves next to the entertainment center.

This wont be allowed because then people would have everything they need to print off their own covers. Part of the rules actually say not to include the spine -

Images must be of the front and back only. Do not include the spine in either the front or back image.

You can do this but you'll have to do all the work in scanning the spines in yourself.

Take a look at the following thread - scroll half way down:

As Forget says, and it is my understanding as well, this is more a legal issue than anything else.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

As mentioned, jaja, this is strictly a legal issue according to ken, you are free to what you want locally, but i doubt very seriously after many years that anything will change this from a Online POV.

It is not even allowed to provide a picture of the box (front and spine in perspective) as sometimes found for pre-release contributions. Not that anyone could make a print out of that.

There you go with language and accompanying attitude again. What you do locally is your business and your business alone, and you have ot deal with whatever ramifications might be involved. Like it or not there are legal issues involved and they have an impact on the future of Invelos, The program and ALL users.

Ken has wisely chosen to proceed in an appropriiately conservative business approach. As I said what you want to do locally is your affair and as someone demonstrated what you want to do apparently can be achieved.

No soup for you.

Yes, I am sure you can, but that doesn't change the fact that it is not legal to do so.  Because it isn't legal, it isn't something you will see Ken provide in the program.

Same. If I want to see what my collection looks like in bookshelf fashion I'll look at my bookshelf

Well, I can see the fun in it, but the same thing can be accomplished with a digital camera aimed at your bookshelf.

As we don't know where jaja714 lives, it may be legal there!

For the program Ken has chosen not to do this to keep away from US legal issues that might not apply in other countries.

And that is the joy of a flexible program and its database, we can all get what we want out of it (most of the time).

Maybe the program can "create spines" for each title in a bookshelf format/front-end.  In other words, it would determine a basic shape based on case type, the user would select a simple color for the spine (they could select colors based on genre or to match the covers), and choose a font to display the title.  You could even add spine numbers based on collection numbers.  And since it would be a local-only feature, the option to allow scans of actual spines could be available for those who want it.

I still think that would encroach too much into a grey area. The current system allows people to scan whatever they want as a Front/Back cover but to actually have a separate area for spines is asking for trouble IMHO.
