| Posted: | | | | I have a dispute with a user about how to parse the name of the costume designer Aggie Guerard Rodgers. He says it has to be parsed as the second option, I say it has to be parsed as the first option. His no vote says: "Her birthname is Agnes Ann Guerard, and she added the lastname of her husband William Rodgers.", but I say that because of that marriage her middle name changed to Guerard just like this website says. What do you think? | | | Martin Zuidervliet

| Posted: | | | | Check out this website. In the bottom it says: "Born in Fresno, California, 1943 to F.A. Reid Guerard and John Guerard." This clearly establishes Guerard as her original Lastname. Here, you can see that see added the Rodgers part to her last name from her first marrriage. I don't see how a lastname can become a middlename. If this contribution is correct, this would mean every 3-part name should be parsed 1/2/3, and I don't think that is correct. | | | View my collection at http://www.chriskepolis.be/home/dvd.htm

As explained in previous posts by our fellow US American users, in the US your maiden name becomes your middlename if you decide to keep it after marriage. --> Aggie/Guerard/Rodgers. | | | Last edited: by sugarjoe |

Yes, our fellow US users have told us that some US women use their maiden name as middle name after their marriage but some other US women choose to keep their maiden name as first part of their last name with the addition of their husbands last name. There are also US women who choose yet another name scheme after their marriage. Therefore it all depends on the individual case. Without further documentation Aggie/Guerard/Rodgers is as good as Aggie//Guerard Rodgers. I'd like if those were magically linked together by the program. | | | Last edited: by RHo |

I'd like if those were magically linked together by the program. I am not an expert on US American womens names... But if what you say is true then the whole middlename field can't be filled without a case to case knowledge. Doesn't make sense to me. Let's get rid of this field ! |

What do you think? Actually the link given documents Aggie//Guerard Rodgers because of the capitalisation of Guerard. This website has the habit to type the first word of a multi word last name in all caps. But as with any third party source a single link is hardly enough documentation. |

I'd like if those were magically linked together by the program. The above is completely true. Here in the US there is no certain way you have to have your name... it is completely up to the woman that is getting married how they want to do it. So it does in fact fall on a case by case bases. I have seen it all here before... - Drop her maiden name all together - Maiden Name becomes middle name and drop middle name all together - Maiden Name becomes a second middle name - Us a double last name I also have been a long time supporter of going to a single name field... that would get rid of any and all Parsing problems. | | | Pete |

A single name field doesn't help for parsing, except if you loose the ability to sort on names. Generally people who want a single name field propose a sort name. And in this case, would it be Rodgers or Guerard Rodgers ? Not a solution to avoid parsing... | | | Images from movies |

I don't support a sort name at all... just a single name field and taking credits exactly as credited on the screen. I personally wouldn't care in the least about loosing the ability to sort on names. | | | Pete |
