For Gene Roddenberry I'd say Original Characters.

For Ian Watson I'd say Original Material, but as Giga says context may change that.

Why contest is important?

Anyway the Roddenberry credit is from the films (Star Trek I to IV), the Watson credit is from A.I.

I'm okay with that as far as Gene Roddenberry's credit is concerned, but "Screen Story By" certainly does NOT equal "Original Characters By" - it's "Story By".

Context might be important because very often a "Based on" credit will follow a previous credit which may affect how we interpret the "based on" credit.

I still think Gene Roddenberry should be Original Characters and I think Ian Watson should be Original Material.

I think for the movies I to V, I would go for the Created by, maybe even movie VI. after those I go for the OMB

I wouldn't agree with that - not with the credit shown by Kluge.
The films are "Based On" something created by Gene Roddenberry, he didn't actually create anything for the films themselves.
And as the credit doesn't suggest that the story is based on anything specific that Gene wrote, I would go for Characters rather than Material.

No way in the world is "Original Characters By" the correct entry for "Based on a Screen Story By". I would enter this as "Original Material By". If it only was "Screen Story By", I would use "Story By".

A bizarre comment to say the least, sorry North but it doesn't even make any sense. Roddenberry created the ENTIRE concept for Star Trek.  So yes i would agree in principle with giga. Created By is more appropriate. The Screen story, yeha I thin Tim has it right.

We have a Created by credit now. I would use that. Created by is a writing credit to the author of prior work. The fact that the author wasn't involved in the current work is immaterial.

The rules chart specifically directs "Screen Story by" to be entered as "Story by".

But it doesn't say "Created By" on the credit, it says "Based On Star Trek Created By". That "Based On" makes all the difference in my eyes. It means that Gene Roddenberry did not create anything for that film, but that the film was based on something else he did create.

Neither, "based on ... created by" is not in the list, therefore not allowed by the rules.

No, "based on a screen story by" is not in the list, therefore not allowed.

Since the rules do not allow neither spelling variants nor functional equivalent to role names, both examples are not allowed by the rules.

I would advocate a rule change to allow such functional equivalents though.
