I started it off and voted YES to include them.

We are always discussing about the way we want the overviews to look and how we want this to be the best database out there and I think if they are referenced in the overview then they should be included.

To be honest I'm not fussed if they're there or not.
I think I know the contribution you're talking about and I don't think it's against the rules to include them or exclude them.

If there's an footnote marker in the overview, the rules dictate that it should be included in the contribution.

Overviews should match the back of the DVD case exactly

Since the rules state that the marker should be included, it only makes sense* to include the footnotes that go along with the marker.

I voted yes to include them, but I can also accept not including them as long as the asterisk is also not included. If one includes the asterisk, I think the footnote should be included.

If a footnote is in the database already, I don't think it should be removed since that just invites the ping pong to add it back again.

I totally agree with this (except for the footnote)

I certainly agree with that too: if the markers are in the overview, then the footnotes should be too.
But I'm not going to vote no on an overview that excludes both the markers and the footnotes.

My feelings are that if the overview includes a (*) to reference a footnote, then it should be included and a footnote should also be included.

Like I said above ... we are trying to make this the best database out there and there is no reason to not include them if they are indeed in the overview.

I do not agree with the statement that it is okay to not include a footnote if a (*) is not placed in the overview. This should be a cut and dry issue ... that is exactly why I did not make the poll to reflect any answer except Yes or No ... we do not need any gray areas when trying to decide on something like this.

This may seem like a minor thing to some people, but with all the little things that get brought up when an overview is contributed, I can not believe this is not an issue with those people also.

Just to make this clear ... I am not talking about any one in particular. This would pertain to  ALL contributions.

Well ... you should vote NO if they are not included.

What makes these any different from someone including markings to designate that a word is bold or italicized in the overview.

Why don't we just forget about doing that too?

I'm pro-footnote (see here) but without a rule change/clarification some will argue they aren't part of the Overview proper.  Nothing said here will change that. <shrug>

How I see it:
If the * is there then it should be included, as well as what it references.

For the sake of argument, or better yet, just to clear it up before it happens:
What if it has an *, and then no footnote for what the asterik is for? I know I've seen this on at least one movie in my collection, but have no idea what one right now.

In a case like this, then I feel the asterik should be left off as well. No point in having one if it doesn't have a footnote.

My 2 cents, don't spend it all in one place.

I think you are posing the question of "what is best?" whereas I am answering the question "what is allowed by the current rules?" To clarify my comments:

I believe the current rules allow for all 3 variants (no asterisk/no footnote, yes asterisk/no footnote, yes asterisk/yes footnote). I believe this is the case because the rules only refer to the overview. The question of asterisks and footnotes is not addressed by the rules at all. One has to accept that asterisks and footnotes are part of the overview in order to accept that the rules for overviews apply to asterisks and footnotes. Since some people accept that while others don't, I believe all variants are possible and acceptable according to the rules. The gray area is a fact under the current rules. I agree that it's not desirable to have that gray area, but it's there nonetheless.

As for my opinion on what's best, I believe it should all be included.

But again, according to the current rules, I believe all are acceptable variants. It's not desirable for that to be so, but that's how I read the current rules.

OK ... what about a footnote and no * ?

Would that be any different then putting a  *  in and have it reference nothing?

I can't quite agree with that because the rules state that the overview must match exactly.

If the overview has a footnote marker and it's not included in the contribution, then it doesn't match exactly.
