| Posted: | | | | I have submitted a change on a common name.
Changing Common Name, as per "Credit Lookup".
Zoë Saldaña 2/2
Zoë Saldana 12/23
Zoe Saldana 82/211
I have several no votes (7) and alot of yes votes (24) on Pirates.
On Guess Who, I have 7 yes and 0 no voted.
Now, the rules say and I quote:
"Crew and Cast Take Crew Credits from the film credits only; list names exactly as they are in the credits. Exception: If the credit information is entirely capitalized, use standard capitalization rules instead.
Use the "Credited As" field where the person's name differs from the credited name.
To determine whether to enter the name directly as credited, or to use the "Credited As" field, use the Credit Lookup tool."
Now, why would you be required to use the Credit Lookup tool and not be required to use the results.
That would not make any sense and make the tool useless. | | | Jim

| Posted: | | | | I'm not quite following you since I don't have that title. Are they credited as "Zoë Saldaña" or "Zoë Saldana" and are trying to change it to "Zoe Saldana" without the Credited As?
If so, that's wrong. You credit them as their common name and use the Credited As to show how they exist in the end credits.
If this is not what you are talking about, please explain again. |

| Posted: | | | | If I am not mistaken...
Credited As: Zoe Saldana In Database now: Zoë Saldana [Zoe Saldana]
Look-up Tool shows: Zoë Saldana - 12 Titles (23 Profiles) Zoe Saldana - 82 titles (211 profiles) Zoë Saldaña - 2 titles (2 profiles)
So he is changing it from Zoë Saldana [Zoe Saldana] to Zoe Saldana
Which is a correct change as the rules tells us to use the look-up tool to determine the name... not to standardize with accents as some of the no voters are reasoning.
A forum poll or decision does not over ride the rules. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | In Pirates Zoe Saldana is credited as Zoe Saldana with a common name of Zoë Saldana.
I am changing the common name from Zoë Saldana to Zoe Saldana because of the results of the Credit Lookup tool. | | | Jim

| Posted: | | | | The huge "ZOË" on http://www.zoesaldana.com/ would suggest that her actual name is indeed spelled with ë, and her official MySpace-page (http://www.myspace.com/thesaldanaexperience) also uses "ZOË" in large letters at the top. I haven't researched any credits yet, though. Quoting eaglejd: Quote: I am changing the common name from Zoë Saldaña to Zoe Saldana because of the results of the Credit Lookup tool. It's very possible that this is just a result of IMDb choosing "Zoe Saldana" as her common name. As has been pointed out time and time again in the past few months, the one thing our "lookup tool" clearly shows is how big a part of our database actually matches IMDb. Nine out of ten times the biggest "score" in our lookup tool will be for the IMDb-name, and it isn't any different in this case. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

| Posted: | | | | Yes that is possible, Tim, but we use the Lookup Tool NOT what YOU believe it to be and that Lookup Tool may well change over time. Jim is Correct

| Posted: | | | | I've found a nice bit of "proof"... Remember that in the end credits of 'The Terminal' (2004), the main cast and crew got to sign their autograph for the end credits? Here's Zoë Saldana's credit: Do with that what you will, but I can sure tell you that I now consider this to be her "common name". | | | Last edited: by T!M |

| Posted: | | | | that is right... the rules state it is the look-up tool that we go by... not any outside proof... matter of fact Ken himself clarified that no more documentation is needed... that the look-up tool is what to go by in the thread he announced it in... From This Thread:Quoting Ken Cole: Quote: Quoting m.cellophane:

So how do we use this? I looked up Barbra Streisand (260 hits) and Barbara Streisand (15 hits). So I just state in my contribution notes that I looked it up in this lookup, state the results, and we're done with documentation?
In general, yes. There will be cases that require a bit more perusing to make sure there aren't false matches. | | | Pete |

Tim: As I said what YOU consider is irrelevant to the Online, that is a LOCAL matter and there you can consider whatever you wish. Here for the ONLINE we use the Credit Lookup Tool which Ken designed. Skip | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! CBE, MBE, MoA and proud of it. Outta here

| Posted: | | | | I must say that I find it both amusing and frustrating that the people who used to complain about accuracy now positively embrace IMDb-data by using the "lookup tool" data, which is basically a carbon copy of IMDb. Some people seem to find such joy in entering the wrong data into DVD Profiler, I truly wonder why that is... I'm just a simple guy: if the girl signs her name as "Zoë Saldana", that's what I'll use. Quoting skipnet50: Quote: what YOU consider It's not what I consider: IT'S HOW THE GIRL SIGNS HER OWN NAME!!! You're perfectly welcome to stick with your IMDb-data, but at least be frank about it. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

| Posted: | | | | Quoting eaglejd: Quote: What proof do you have that the Credit Lookup Tool is a reflection of IMDB? Just try and look up any name (with known variants) in the "lookup tool": every single time the IMDb-name will render the most hits. For instance, I easily see about 40 'The Terminal' profiles, in which she's credited as "Zoë Saldana", listed under "Zoe Saldana". These should all be corrected, and then you have 40 more "Zoë Saldana" credits, and 40 less "Zoe Saldana" credits. A few more films where she's actually credited as "Zoë Saldana" but listed as "Zoe Saldana" because those profiles are just IMDb-copies, and hey presto, the balance might tip right over. I feel I've provided some solid evidence, but rather then going to work and correcting those profiles that are obviously wrong, people choose to embrace the IMDb-name. I really cannot figure out why people are so willing to accept and enter wrong data. |

| Posted: | | | | I agree with Jim... We are told for contribution purposes to use what we find in the look-up tool... that is what matters for the online database... and you only believe that it represents what is in imdb.. and not what is actually credited.... personally I believe it to for some names... but there is a way of fixing it... getting on top of things and making sure we get credits from the end credits into the main database.
Will we have to change some more then once... I am sure we probably will... but I have no problem with that as that is what the rules will demand. | | | Pete |

| Posted: | | | | I checked a bit more: these are are all films in which she's credited as "Zoë Saldana" (and there are more), but of which profiles contain erroneously contain the IMDb-name of "Zoe Saldana":
5x Center Stage 15x Crossroads 11x Get Over It 11x Drumline 39x The Terminal
There you go: 81 profiles which SHOULD have "Zoë Saldana" but don't. And that just took me about ten minutes - there's certainly more. I would rather focus on correcting those erroneous profiles than to try and force an incorrect common name through our collective throats. This exercise clearly shows that we cannot yet rely on the "lookup tool" at all - if I can dig up 80 wrong entries in ten minutes, then I don't see how you can possibly use that source to start removing "Zoë Saldana" as her common name from profiles. |

| Posted: | | | | We can use the look-up tool because that is what the rules tells us to do... we don't have to like it... we just have to do it.
other then that... we all need to work on getting the right info into the main database so that what we have to use will start showing the correct info... whatever the correct names will be. But until then we can not break the rules just because we feel it hurts more then helps right now. | | | Pete |
